Is anyone familiar with Newcastle train station?

I'm travelling to Edinburgh from the south, changing at Newcastle. I only have a 10 minute window to change trains and I am really anxious that it's such a short time as I understand that the station is pretty big and my ticket isn't flexible. If you know the station, does 10 minutes seem doable?

10 minutes will easily be enough from the two furthest apart platforms 😀

Tightsonmyboat · 12/10/2021 16:21

I wouldn't say it was pretty big at all, you'll be fine Smile

inmyheadimthequeen · 12/10/2021 16:29

Thank you so much!! I looked it up on Wikipedia and it said there are 15 platforms which is why I was worried (my local station only has 2!), it's great to know that it is achievable. Very grateful for the prompt response.

I've done that, it'll be fine, unless there's any delays. I think the platforms will be really close to each other. You can ask the guard to point you in the right direction at Newcastle when s/he comes round to check your ticket when you get on.

CallMeRisley · 12/10/2021 16:32

Yes it has numerous platforms but they’re all close together and accessible, unlike say, Edinburgh Waverley which you might be heading to. Ten minutes should be fine assuming no delay to your first train. You could speak to the staff on your first train and ask which platform you’ll be arriving at and whether they can tell you which platform your next train will be at. Or I think you can see that info on the ticket app?

AdaColeman · 12/10/2021 16:32

Take a look at the national rail website, there is a part called "stations made easy" or something similar.
It is plans of all stations, I'm sure Newcastle Central will be there!

Your ticket may have which platform you will arrive at and depart from, or you can find out from your rail company. You can then plan your route through the station from your arrival platform to departure platform, including lifts/stairs etc.

Still keep an eye on departure and information boards of course, in case of last minute changes. I think you can print out the station plans if it would help you.

Anything to reduce travel stress I say!

EllieQ · 12/10/2021 16:33

It should be doable. My experience of changing trains at Newcastle is that the trains are always seem to be at the opposite sides of the station and it’s a rush over the footbridge!

I would suggest checking the layout of the station so you’ll have a rough idea of where you’re going - I think there are plans of all the major stations on the Network Rail website.

DawnAnn · 12/10/2021 16:36

As long as your train isn't delayed, then 10 mins will be enough time.

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/10/2021 16:38

Yup. Its not a big station so if your train is on time you will make it easily.

Where are you travelling from and to?

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/10/2021 16:39

Sorry, just seen your going to Newcastle. Most of those trains go from the central platforms (so in the middle).

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/10/2021 16:40

FFS, I need chocolate. Edinburgh not Newcastle.

inmyheadimthequeen · 12/10/2021 16:44

Thanks everyone, I've got more info from you lot in 10 mins than I managed to find on the rail website in 2 hours!

While you're on the train, if you use the national rail app you will be able to check which platform you'll be coming into and which platform the Edinburgh train will be leaving from. Then hopefully armed with the map (it's a bit small... www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations-and-destinations/stations-made-easy/newcastle-station-plan), you will have 5 mins to work out the route.

Timperleybell · 13/10/2021 09:03

Help to assist If you have an idea of the station layout sequencing of platforms location of overbridges / underpasses. Then when getting close to the station check on the national rail app arrivals and departures to check your change.

inmyheadimthequeen · 13/10/2021 15:19

I made it! Not sure I would have done without the tips and the map so a huge thank you to those who took the time to help, it really was useful.

I'm so glad that your journey went smoothly, and you arrived safely.

Just as an aside, I think the Prosser Grand Portico has been completely vandalised by being glassed in. What function does it serve now?

inmyheadimthequeen · 13/10/2021 22:21

So sorry Adacoleman, I don't understand the question?!

We watched a TV programme, that we had recorded, about Newcastle railway station. There is a really interesting series on channel 5 about railway architecture.

I imagine the glass is to keep the main concourse warmer. They have done the same at Sheffield.

inmyheadimthequeen · 14/10/2021 09:48

Ah, now I understand. Sorry but this was my first time in with her Newcastle or Edinburgh stations and I was completely focused on getting from platform to platform so I barely looked up!
