We are there next week for three nights so looking for two days worth of walks/must see sights. Any recommendations? We’ve never been. Two adults (leaving kids at home!), fit and well but nothing too adventurous (ie no scrambling up rocks).

I’d be so grateful for recommendations! Thanks x

Oh and any restaurant/pub recommendations for the evening?

Ambleside Tap Yard is definitely worth a visit - lovely beer and wood cooked pizza best place we visited when in Ambleside in May.

Also recommend the coffin trail walk from Rydal to Grasmere.

Wansfell Pike is a good walk from Ambleside though it is fairly steep initially - nice stop at the pub in Troutbeck for a rest and then carrying on!

Thank you so much @Thecatisboss - taking notes!

Baldrys Grasmere for lunch and lemon meringue pie
Lucy’s on a Plate in Ambleside for dinner
Would also recommend the coffin trail walk

Great, thanks @WinterBerry7! Will look up the coffin trail walk. We love amazing views (if the weather is being kind) - is it a beautiful walk?

Yes, Wansfell Pike via Troutbeck would definitely fit your bill. Great views of Lake Windemere.

longestlurkerever · 03/10/2021 16:58

Loughrigg fell is a nice walk near there. Lovely views and not difficult. My 6yo was first to the top! You can swim in many of the lakes. Coniston water is great for that.

bookish83 · 03/10/2021 17:04

Dodds is a lovely restaurant but can get busy. We prefer it in the day!

gogohm · 03/10/2021 17:07

Book restaurants! Was a nightmare last month at least in a neighbouring town, we hadn't booked ahead

lazylinguist · 03/10/2021 17:08

Hard to find a walk that isn't beautiful around there really! The Loughrigg one is stunning. My favourite is the walk to Easdale Tarn though. If you want more of a 'just hanging around by a lake' session, then Coniston is my fave.

Parsnipsandgravy · 03/10/2021 17:08

@gogohm the three I’ve tried so far don’t take bookings any more!

Got for dinner at The Drunken Duck if you can get a table.

From Ambleside there's a lovely walk up to High Sweden Bridge and back, a really nice loop. Probably take 2 hours if you're walking at a good pace and don't take a break.

MostlyCloudy · 03/10/2021 17:13

Coffin trail to Grasmere (for some gingerbread) and Loughrigg Fell!

Parsnipsandgravy · 03/10/2021 17:14

Thank you so much everyone. You’re making me really excited!

I just hope the weather is kind to you...

emmathedilemma · 04/10/2021 08:21

Fairfield horseshoe if you're feeling energetic.

Gizmo98765 · 04/10/2021 16:20

Zefferelli’s is lovely even if your not a vegetarian.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/10/2021 16:28

Another vote for Loughrigg Fell and the coffin trail. The latter is OK even in overcast/wet conditions.

You can get the bus to Grasmere and walk all the way back for either of the above. Or for a longer walk you can park near Skelwith bridge (White Wells car park), go up over Loughrigg, down to Grasmere and then back over Chapel Stile to Elterwater and then stroll back along the river to your car.

Or you can walk from White Wells all the way up Langdale to Dungeon Ghyll (mostly flat).

Although it’s a tourist trap, over priced and too busy, we usually call in at Chesters at Skelwith Bridge for a tasty pastry and coffee.

There’s also a really nice Mexican restaurant in Ambleside. Can’t remember what it’s called though.

Katzenjammers2 · 04/10/2021 16:59

Loughrigg Fell. Walk from Ambleside and visit Rydal Caves on the way.

Lucy’s on a plate for dinner (definitely book in advance) and the Copper Pot cafe for breakfast.

Stillgoings · 06/10/2021 09:19

Definitely Loughrigg, it has it all, a perfect.first Wainwright walk..and yes to the drunken duck if you can get in!
For the second day a walk I like is parking at elterwater then a circular to cathedral caves and back via skelwith bridge. You pass by Chester's as recommended above on the way back.
The viewranger app is really.good for finding and following walks
