Trip to London from Kent

Could anyone help with the following please? I'm not really familiar with London and Google isn't really helping so far.

Planning a 1 night stay in London and hoping to go to the Science Museum and Tower of London. We are in South East Kent and would prefer to drive in but would take the train if it's a lot cheaper.

Is there a location that's easy to get to and close to both of those attractions that won't cost a fortune to get to?

Would it be better to drive to the outskirts of London somewhere, stay there and get the Tube into the centre?

Grateful for any advice.

Lots of good hotels around the Tower of London, starting from the Four Seasons at the top price end and getting lower in price from there. There are direct tubes from King's Cross to either Tower Hill (Circle line) or Aldgate (Circle line and Metropolitan line).

Lots of places to eat nearby, plus things to see/do for both kids and adults. St Katherine's Dock is on the doorstep, or walk south across Tower Bridge to Butlers Wharf and/or London Riverside. Alternatively walk north up to Spitalfields.

(I live in the area and after over 20 years, still haven't run out of things to do).

Finally, get the train. Don't even consider driving.

Just thought I'd update what we did in the end. We took the High Speed train to St Pancras and I'm so glad we did. It was a Monday morning in half term but not too busy.
The Science Museum was closed and Tower of London was busy, so we did the British Museum (lovely), the aquarium (overpriced), a hop-on-hop-off bus (expensive unless you get a discount voucher, but a great way to see everything/sit in traffic for hours..), then we just wandered along South Bank and round Covent Garden etc.
We stayed in Premier Inn near St Pancras. This was fine but a bit too far out. Next time I would definitely stay closer to the action, maybe at the Premier Inn near Waterloo. I thought it would be good to get to the hotel and dump our bags as soon as we got off the train, but we ended up getting a lot of taxis from there. In hindsight we should have got the taxi from the station with our bags, then be in easy walking distance of everything.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
