Looking to book a holiday for next summer, both my dc are on the autistic spectrum so going abroad is tricky (single parent), both will be breaking up from school early as it’s dd1’s A level year and dd2’s GCSE year so I can book for a couple of weeks before schools break up. Both DC’s have mobility issues so we can’t do much walking and not interested in centre parks type thing as they won’t do the activities. Ideally we would like somewhere with a hot tub, somewhere rural but with a town/city within a hours drive. We live in the SW so we have done Devon, Cornwall and Dorset to death 🤣. Any suggestions?

Forest holidays lodges are nice and most have a hot tub. They're a lot smaller sites and less facilities / activities (if any) on site than Centre Parcs. The one at Delamere Forest might suit as that's within an hour of Chester and Manchester by road or train. It's a pretty new site so the lodges should be good.

So many places in Scotland I haven't been, would like to see.

We stayed in the Scottish Borders this year in a townhouse in a nice market town and we were only 15 minutes drive from Northumberland too - also beautiful. Lots to do and see in both places, all within an hour's drive Smile

Northumberland is lovely and from Alnmouth you're an hour on the train to Edinburgh and 30min to Newcastle for your city needs.
Loch Lomond might suit you for Scotland as you're within an hour of Glasgow.
Both are a heck of a long way from the South West though! Also note that Scottish schools break up earlier than England (usually end of June) so it might not be as quiet as you expect further north.

Thank you, I love the look of forest holidays. We would love to go to the Forest of Dean as we drove through there a few weeks ago but didn’t get to have a look around.

South Wales? We have stayed in a beautiful cottage with a hot tub in Camarthenshire. Or closer to Saundersfoot/Tenby.

I recommend Portmeirion portmeirion.wales/ The Hotel is lovely and has a pool and spa and at least one of the cottages has a hot tub portmeirion.wales/cottages/borthwen-bach. It's next to a beautiful beach and there are heritage railways nearby as well as castles etc. Has the feel of being somewhere abroad too.

Forest of Dean is nice and less popular but very much an outdoor holiday area. We liked it but had a couple of days bad weather and found it hard to find interesting things to do indoors.

Normally I would have said Wales, our holiday this year, but again, more outdoor orientated. Great for DD who loves this, not so much for me who isn't the biggest fan.

We stayed in Llandudno North Wales, really liked the town but had a flat which I found a bit too small.

Could you combine it with a City? York is great for a couple of days and then a lodge with a hot tub where you can switch between relaxing and some activities? Similar Edinburgh?

We stayed in north Wales this year and went to Llandudno, I’m not sure if it was because of the weather (it was really Misty) but I had a really weird feeling there. When we drive home we went through the Forest of Dean to avoid motorways and it looked so pretty but yes, probably not ideal for the dc as I can imagine there’s not much to do if it rains. It’s really hard to please all 3 of us 🤣 especially with the mobility issues, I love walking but it’s no good when I have the DC’s with me.

You may have been already if from SW but Isles of Scilly are lovely. I have 2 teenage kids, 1 asd and they loved it. We were on Tresco and no cars on the islands but there were boats / taxis / golf buggies to get to hotels. Lots of nice beaches and rocks (my asd loves rocks), if they can do kayaking there's lots of that, beautiful scenery, lots of boat trips to see other islands or wildlife. St Marys has the most on their islands very close by so maybe best suited to limited walking abilities. There's horse riding on beach there as well. Though probably depends if mobility issues are just walking or every activity. You can get the boat there or the helicopter or the small Skybus plane. The Abbey Gardens on Tresco are beautiful and lots of red squirrels and beautiful birds, cafe is worth going to even if can't walk round. On Tresco there were golf buggies picking up people struggling with walking though it was mainly elderly.

My recommendations would be the Lake District - so long as you are prepared to drive around there are plenty walks (I know you said mobility issues); but there are plenty short walks to do. However, it may be busy in the summer.

A second alternative (miles away for you) would be Northumberland; plenty beaches, short walk and picnic. Newcastle City Centre for shopping, if you are interested there are loads of castles to visit. Slightly further north there is Holy Island.

I also like the suggestion from someone about about Forest Holidays - they have a variety of sites to choose from. We regularly used to stay with them until a weekend break (out of season) cost us more than a week in a large cottage in the lakes (in season)! I would recommend looking at them, and maybe trying to find some other cabins that might suit your needs.

The Lake District is beautiful, and there is so much more to do there than just walking. Ambleside is my favourite place in the UK. It’s a pretty little town, near to the big touristy places, but quieter.
