Where to stay in London convenient to Heathrow and museums?

Hoping to travel to London next year from Ireland with 3dc 11,8 and 6yrs.

Any suggestions on places to stay convenient to Natural History Museum, British Museum and Harry Potter Experience etc?

The museums around South Kensington are the Science Museum, Natural History Museum and the V&A, with Kensington Palace Gardens and Hyde Park within walking distance.....so any accommodation around South Kensington or the hotels around Gloucester Rd tube station (Piccadilly Line - for the West End theatres and shopping and the District and Circle Lines for anywhere around London) is an excellent choice.

Definitely check out the “Citadines Apartment Hotels” (there is one in South Kensington). Serviced apartments are ideal for families; you can make your own breakfast to save on costs, make your own sandwiches or snacks if you don’t fancy eating out all the time.

Best to get a 1 bedroomed apartment with 2 of the kids sleeping on a sofa bed in the lounge and you are allowed one extra bed for a child. Strongly suggest to book this directly with the hotel though rather than through a third party booking agency.

There are other ‘Apart Hotels’ in the vicinity eg. Fraser or Somerset.

@CarmenSanDiego2020 - forgot to add that there are lots of double decker buses which travel on the main roads eg. Cromwell Rd to Harrods and Trafalgar Square etc. which the kids might love if they go on the top deck :)

Ah thanks for the detailed reply. Plenty to research!

Oh, and another btw! The Piccadilly underground line goes directly from the LHR terminals to central London.

I lived overseas for many years and have often flown into Heathrow and then jumped on the Piccadilly Line to Gloucester Road tube station. (All within the vicinity eg. Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn the Forum, Marriott Hotel, Fraser Suites. There is a Waitrose supermarket at the tube station and a large Sainsburys a short walk away on the Cromwell Rd.

Not sure if they are still operating but there was a minibus service called “Hotel By Bus” which picks you up at LHR and drops off at certain hotels - I took it myself once when I had a huge heavy suitcase and was going to the Holiday Inn.

Harry Potter Studio is out near Watford. You can get train/bus from Euston to Watford Junction or stay further out near M25 and drive round.

Last time I looked the Piccadilly Line wasn't stopping at South Kensington

Pinotpleasure · 06/09/2021 22:28

@GMH74 - no it doesn’t, but the Piccadilly Line stops at Gloucester Rd Underground station which is in the borough. The Circle and District Lines stop at South Kensington and Gloucester Rd,

@CarmenSanDiego2020 - you can find maps of the Underground, Overground and bus maps in London here:

I’ve stayed several times at the Premier Inn near Earls Court tube. Very easy access to central London and the Kensington museums.

Another option is to stay near where you get off the train from whatever airport, so near kings cross st pancras for a Luton airport arrival (yha youth hostel here) or Liverpool Street for Stansted etc etc. Handy for dropping bags off and leaving them there on last day. Not so handy if you plan to go to museums on several days

If you’re staying in west London you can get a direct train (overground) from Kensington Olympia or Shepherds Bush to Watford Junction for your Harry Potter trip.

Great info thanks. Might look at a private transfer too

We stayed near Ealing Broadway station, which might suit. Cheaper than somewhere more central, but on the District line for the museums, Central line for the British Museum, and tfl rail for Heathrow.
