Hi All. Looking at a possible holiday cottage rental in Flamborough. Please can anyone recommend any activities for kids aged 12, 10 and 8 in the local area? Thanks!

South Landing Beach, Thornwick Bay and Danes Dyke are good for rock pooling.
At Bridlington there’s crazy golf, a pottery painting cafe, Bondville model village, John Bull World of rock and can do crabbing off the jetty steps or harbour walls.
At Scarborough there’s an aquarium, a boating lake in Peasholm Park, Alpamere water park and vintage fairground rides at the Scarborough Fair Collection.

Filey is better. Flamborough is a tiny village

EwwSprouts · 01/09/2021 21:29

Flamborough has an RSPB site and you can see lots of seabirds up close and sometimes dolphins or a whale (not so close!).
Sewerby Hall north of Bridlington usually has activities or a trail. Entry is cheap as it's council owned.
Cayton Bay has a surf school.

FizziWater · 01/09/2021 21:39

Not much at Flamborough though fine for a day out.
I'd agree Filey much better or Scarborough for those ages.

Thank you all - really helpful. We're going in October so will be a bit colder but some ideas to start looking into!

All these spots are within 10 miles of each other on a main road and train line anyway. Cayton is the best beach, Filey a nice Edwardian smaller fishing town, Scarborough more lively and more of a traditional resort without the poverty/drugs of others. Brid is a shithole below its north end and old town, but sewerby hall especially kids will like (a mile or so from flamborough with a zoo) and danes dyke just above which i love for foraging. Great underrated countryside nearby. Rudston monolith i find fascinating but appreciate to others its an old dull pagan rock.

dogsdogsdogs · 03/09/2021 15:35

They do boat trips from north landing and fishing trips. The half hour boat trips are really good. it is weather dependant though. they are on Facebook - north landing tours and fishing.
cayton bay is so much fun for climbing and exploring caves when the sea is out ( same at north landing)
obviously loads to do in the nearby seaside twins too, you have Bridlington with boat trips, speed boat, pirate ship) also a soft play called montyzoomers which is on the seafront and attached to a bar. There is Bridlington leisure centre with a pool which has slides in (and a climbing wall (got to prebook)
you have scarborough about 40 mins away which has alparmere swimming and peasholm park which has rowing boats ect. absolutely loads to do in the surrounding area.

BrozTito · 03/09/2021 15:35

And theres whitby a very nice close short drive away

Redhotchllisteppa · 03/09/2021 16:54

Burton agnes hall not far from bridlington has a Halloween trail that my dd used to like, probably a bit tame for the 12 year old though. Also a couple of good surf schools (one on scarborough, one at cayton bay) that do lessons, inc things like paddle boarding as well as surfing

BrozTito · 03/09/2021 17:14

Ohh yeah burton agnes, a 12 year old would like the maze and the headless ghost. Also sledmere nearby and dalby forest

liveeverysecond · 04/09/2021 23:26

Thank you all so much, this is really helpful. We're coming from down south so not familiar with the area at all. Thank you

Thinkng of more-York is within about an hours drive, then you have N yorkshire moors and the steam train very near dalby forest which is great to have dinner on. I love hulls museums, especially on William wilberforce/slavery if you're coming from that direction. Dont go below brid coastally imo, it suddenly becomes extremely bleak. Best bits of east yorkshire are the wolds.

BrozTito · 05/09/2021 09:06

Theres a briliant watersports place in brandesburton near Beverley. Used to be called brandesburton billabong or something. Big area for tolkien, hockney, p larkin, winifred holtby if you have any interest.

BrozTito · 05/09/2021 09:13

One last one, i used to work at the pipe and glass, Michelin starred place in a great bit of countryside. Amazing food and child friendly but steep prices (for this part of the world)

Effybriest · 05/09/2021 18:51

Wouldn't say whitby a short drive tbh (just over an hour away) but is worth a trip definitely.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/09/2021 18:55

Boat trip from Bridlington on the Yorkshire Belle, specially good if you like wildlife.

DiscontentedWoman · 05/09/2021 18:56

Cayton surf school is great. Cayton beach is lovely too.

DiscontentedWoman · 05/09/2021 19:00

Mumford's of Yorkshire in the Scarborough old market hall is lovely for lunch but possibly not the most kid-friendly menu depending on their tastes. Filey is nice for a wander around.

DiscontentedWoman · 05/09/2021 19:00

Good pies at the Redcliffe farm shop which is just before Cayton beach.

EwwSprouts · 06/09/2021 21:04

Go to Filey at low tide with wellies there are great rock pools at the bottom of the brigg.

Not been but friends recommend. www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g528807-d3198436-Reviews-Bridlington_Animal_Park-Bridlington_East_Riding_of_Yorkshire_England.html

The sealife centre in Hull and the museums in Hull are good for a wet day. We once visited the museums and went for a meal in the old town.

Whitby abbey have events on for kids at half term. You could do a boat ride in Whitby too. Seafood on the front and an ice cream.

York - Eden camp on the outskirts. You could spend a few hours there.
