Hello
Thinking of taking my mum to Stonehenge but we'd be with 2 young children and I'm hearing different stories of whether it's worth the trip - has anyone been and what did you think?

It's hard to tell on the website but it sounds like you can't go up to the stones and it's a bit of a walk - is there parking? would you advise going with a pram!?

any tips appreciated :-)

I wouldn't bother with young kids as they won't get much out of it. Parking is easy and there is a free shuttle bus from the entrance so a pram is doable. We took our kids at 10 and nearly 13 and they appreciated it. My youngest is a history nerd though. We really enjoyed it but as we have English Heritage membership through a corporate scheme we didn't have to worry about entry fee on the day.

I hated it
It felt malevolent

You have to stay away from the stones, they're roped off all the way round. Definitely doable with a pram. I've done it in a wheelchair. Not sure if small children will like it, but if you do go, wrap up, it can get quite chilly!

I thought it was quite expensive but worth going. I had expected the stones to be in a beautiful setting but they are just sort of plonked in a field - the surrounding countryside is pretty boring.

We didn't take the shuttle and walked from the visitors' centre but it was a bit of a trek in the end.

Honestly not worth it with prams and little ones.

How young are the children? It's quite do-able logistically as pp said with the shuttle bus.

If the children think they're just looking at giant stones from a distance it wouldn't be most exciting but I found it fascinating as there was so much to it I didn't know about and I think with a bit of creative story telling it should be possible to keep children enthralled if they are old enough to understand.

Go to Avebury instead. Huge stone circle with a pub in the middle. there'sa lot of space for the kids to run and you can touch the stones. aand it's free! Except parking
