Durham short break

Going for a two night midweek break to Durham in mid September. Any recommendations for places to eat, especially with good gluten-free options. Also things to do. I’m thinking of walking around the city ( is it quite compact?), and visiting the castle and/ or cathedral. Never been there before.

City is very compact and easy to walk around. Check the tours and opening times of the castle as if students are back or freshers arriving then the castle may be completely closed to visitors as students live there.

Lots of little museums such as the oriental museum, nice paths by the river, botanic gardens and the Durham Old gardens.

Just lots of pottering.

Depending on how much time you actually have you could consider Beamish museum.

Cafedral, Vennels, Tia’s and La Spaghettata are good places with GF options.

The cathedral is an absolute must, it’s an amazing building. Maybe try and catch Evensong while you’re there, the cathedral choir is very good.

Thanks so much for suggestions.
I think the Castle might be closed if university students back ( 15/16 September trip)?

When I was at Castle there were plenty of termtime tours.

I agree with all the walking and sightseeing suggestions so far. Plus it isn't too far a drive from Barnard Castle, if you want to test your eyes Wink

You might be OK 15th and 16th for Castle tours. Another ex castle student here and though they had tours in term time they would usually be closed to tourists on the weekends students were moving in or out. Freshers is usually a bit later though.

Follow Durham Castle Museum and Tours on Facebook for the tour info and booking links. Doesn't seem to be a September update yet.
