Hi
I've got a week in Somerset after the schools go back. I need to go to Burgess on Sea on day. And would like to travel on the West Somerset Railway.

Otherwise I'm overwhelmed by choices.

Suggestions about where to stay (I'm happy to move mid week) and what to do very welcome.

I'm more a national trust property/ country walk person than anything else.

I'll be driving and while my natural instinct is to book to go to Bath I'm holding off as i can do that by train !

Glastonbury Tor and Brean Down for walks with a view.
Clarks village in Street for retail therapy.

overthethamesfromyou · 23/08/2021 15:30

Brean Down is lovely

MauveMavis · 23/08/2021 15:31

Burnham on Sea.

Correction!

Burnham will leave you disappointed, sorry to say! Hestercombe gardens, fyne court are both lovely walks. There are a few guest houses in west Bagborough, Which is a small and absolutely beautiful village. The rising sun inn is a gorgeous country pub which also has rooms, situated in the village. The village is an area of outstanding natural beauty and at the foot of the quantock hills.

I grew up in the village and live nearby, if you have any questions please do ask 😊

I'm not a very NT person, but I did like the Somerset area

Clevedon- walk on the pier and swim in the sea pool
Cheddar Gorge (some lovely walks around there), even a drive through is nice.
Bristol, especially the SS Britain
Wells

Jumpingintosummer · 23/08/2021 15:44

Where are you travelling from?

I would go alternative and stay in Exeter.

Just over an hr to Burnham on sea/1hr 20 to the west Somerset railway.

I too am a national trust kind of person and would suggest Exeter Cathedral,Exmouth estuary, Buckfast Abbey, Cockington village (it’s in the doomsday book!), Dartmouth (steam train from Exeter via Totness).

Exeter has lovely restaurants, shopping, nice river walk etc.

Bimblybomeyelash · 23/08/2021 15:47

Tyntesfield is an NT worth a visit. Lots of lovely walks to be had in the mendips around Cheddar gorge and Ebbor gorge. Wells is nice for a potter around.

JuneFromBethesda · 23/08/2021 15:48

Definitely Glastonbury Tor, if you’re in that neck of the woods. The view is spectacular.

ILoveAnOwl · 23/08/2021 15:56

We got BRILLIANT pizzas and cannoli from a place called 'Fireaway' in Burnham yesterday. Possibly not the recommendation you were looking for, but they were really good!

Getting the steam train to Minehead is a nice journey. You can stop at Dunster and visit the castle which is lovely.

ivykaty44 · 23/08/2021 16:09

If you go to Wells

then visit at 11am and go and see the clock in the cathedral (not much point visiting at 1am but 12 will be an excellent time`)

Selworth is worth a visit for a cream tea and a look around

Tarr steps is beautiful and a walk along the river there is beautiful

Lynton and Lynmouth os worth a visit and a trip on the railway there to experience the engineering, the museum is quaint at Lynmouth

someonelockthefridgealready · 23/08/2021 16:31

If you're going on the railway, I'd stay in Dunster. You can visit the castle and watermill there, visit Porlock, Selworthy, Luccombe, Lynton and Lynmouth, all which have beautiful walks, either on the moors or the costal footpath. Fyne Court, Hestercombe and Knightshayes for NT places.

MauveMavis · 25/08/2021 22:12

Thanks all.

Lynmouth/Lynton was lovely. We had a really nice day there
And west porlock if you happen to be passing for a little wander along the harbour

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2021 22:16

If you like NT stuff, and you’re going inks do. Stourhead is lovely in the autumn.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/08/2021 22:16

Yy to a wander around Wells. Especially if you liked Hot Fuzz.

Inks do = inland

I work in Burnham and grew up there (no longer live there) and I agree with not rushing to see Burnham. There isn't much there tbh! All the others suggestions I definitely second, especially Cheddar, Wells and Dunster Castle
