UK city break with sparkle in mid September

Trying to plan a reviving week away in mid September, and can't think where to go (sign of the year its been). Going alone. In normal times I love Edinburgh Fringe, and have been thinking of an interesting walkable city, beautiful, with history/museums, nice (not too pricey) restaurants, ideally by the sea and with walks... but where might this be?

I like York/Canterbury/Brighton, but have done them to death; loved Belfast and Glasgow. Wondering about Bristol. Or somewhere in the north east? Where would you suggest and what would you do there? Thanks

I liked Bristol, a bit more edgy (not dangerous) than Canterbury but really good fun.

Dozer · 19/08/2021 13:37

London!

RampantIvy · 19/08/2021 13:46

Newcastle.
I'm here right now. I have eaten my way round South East Asia, and ate fish and chips one evening on Tynemouth beach for tea.
Loads to see and do.
Tynemouth easy to get to on the metro.

redmapleleaves1 · 19/08/2021 13:48

Oh thank you both. @Dozer, yes great point, forgot to say, London/Oxford/Cambridge our current nights out/day trips. Smashing places just hoping for more exotic allure :)

Just come back from Bristol and it was great! Fantastic restaurant scene too.

emmathedilemma · 19/08/2021 13:59

Newcastle with a day trip to Durham? Easy access to the coast on the Metro.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 19/08/2021 14:02

My husband went to Manchester a few years ago and loved it.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 19/08/2021 14:03

Bath or Bristol are lovely. You could almost combine the two.

LizzieBet14 · 19/08/2021 14:17

Chester is lovely and there's lots to do in Liverpool.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/08/2021 14:20

Manchester or Liverpool?

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/08/2021 14:20

Bristol. It's not on the coast but the nearest sandy is about 40 minutes to an hour down the motorway.

RampantIvy · 19/08/2021 14:31

Carlisle is unexpectedly nice.

Ricekrispie22 · 19/08/2021 16:03

What about Bath? It’s got loads of history. I particularly enjoyed the Jane Austen Museum, No 1 Royal Crescent and the fashion museum. You could catch a train into Bristol for the day and it’s about an hour to Stonehenge (you could take a coach trip if you’re not taking a car). I’d recommend Sally Lunn’s, The Pump Room and Sotto Sotto for food.

Liverpool, with boat trips on the river or a visit to the Gormley statues at Crosby, or a walk along the prom at New Brighton for sea air. Wide range of things to do and see, huge array of restaurants at all prices.

Dozer · 19/08/2021 19:18

A friend raved about the places to eat in Liverpool.

Dozer · 19/08/2021 19:18

And the beach too!

ChirpyChirp · 19/08/2021 19:33

Durham! Loads of history. Lovely river walks. Great bars and restaurants.

Ellmau · 19/08/2021 20:16

Bath!

TheVolturi · 19/08/2021 20:17

Manchester is great. Stay at The Midland.

redmapleleaves1 · 20/08/2021 08:26

This was a great thing to do, thank you all. I'm feeling so much more enthusiastic about the options.

Now I can't decide, but Newcastle/Tynemouth/Durham, Bristol/coast/Bath, Liverpool/Crosby/New Brighton, Manchester / Chester all sound like great options. :) Thanks

That's a great road trip! Grin

MissFritton65 · 21/08/2021 17:48

@redmapleleaves1 have you considered Cardiff? Lovely city.

redmapleleaves1 · 21/08/2021 20:28

@MissFritton65 love Cardiff. Grew up not far away, yes great suggestion otherwise, thanks.

@redmapleleaves1 thanks; I grew up there too! Manchester would be my second choice although not near the sea!
