Things to do around Buxton that aren't hiking/climbing

Going for a short break as DH likes hiking etc. Not convinced that DS 18 will want to do lots of this, and I really don't enjoy it. I'm happy to sit and read and relax a lot of the time, but DS will probably want more to do!

Having Googled, I've discovered a boat trip through caves, a museum and a swimming pool, but really looking for some local knowledge - any suggestions most welcome.

Does he like cycling? There's quite a few cycle trails nearby (Monsal, Manifold, Tissington) that are along old railway lines. I think all of them have a bike hire place. If he's more adventurous (and has a mountain bike), there is good mountain biking to be had in Macclesfield Forest.

Paddleboarding? Tittesworth Reservoir has a water activities centre. Was very busy last time I passed, so definitely book in advance.

Oh, and Alton Towers! But that might not be quite the holiday you had in mind...

Buxton Norfolk or Buxton Derbyshire?

There's a GoApe in Buxton too, though he might feel himself a bit old for it?

Planetsandstars · 19/08/2021 10:24

Hmm, there’s a nice park but I’m guessing that’s not quite what he’ll want at 18 Grin

There are some nice horse riding centres around there, if the two of you fancy seeing the world from a different angle?

There's a direct train from Buxton to Manchester which takes about an hour. Plenty for him to do there! Have you looked to see what shows/plays are on in Buxton whilst you're there?

Heights of Abraham? Eyam Plague Village & Museum? Crich Tramway Museum? Chatsworth House? All within about 30 minutes of Buxton.

Thanks for all your suggestions, will have a look at some of those.

The Tissington Trail is ace, you can walk or hire bikes. I haven’t been to Poole’s Cavern since I was a kid, but loved it. If you’re in the car breakfast at the Yonderman bikers cafe just south of Buxton is awesome, especially on a Sunday when all the bikers are doing their circuits of the Peaks.

Yes!

It's basically a dormitory village these days, but does have B&Bs so can be used as the base for exploring north Norfolk- pretty central for it, so lots within reach
(sounds like you know that already!)

And yes, good chippie

I don’t know which pool you were thinking about , but what about the outdoor pool in Hathersage ?

I love the Hathersage pool, but find it almost impossible to get tickets. The members snap them all up before public booking opens every week, unless you're really lucky.
