Foodie Weekend Break Recommendations/Experiences

Already thinking ahead to Christmas - I want to get DH a short break in the UK, a night or two, with amazing (Michelin-starred) food. Obvious options being things like Hand & Flowers, Ynyshir, and Le Manoir. I would love to hear any recommendations or experiences people have. We are midlands based so I have already counted out anything as far Scotland or Cornwall, too far to drive for only a night or two.

Last year I gifted him the 'Staycation' package from Hampton Manor and he loved it, the highlight being the second night at Michelin-starred restaurant Peels, though the whole weekend was superb.

Le Manoir is booked really far ahead but is amazing if you can get a room

What about Sat Bains in Nottingham? www.restaurantsatbains.com/

Hambleton Hall in Rutland. The chef at the hotel has a Michelin star and on the following day you could eat at The Olive Branch which is quite close www.theolivebranchpub.com

If you can afford and get a reservation at fat duck or the waterside inn, we love staying at Oaklet Court hotel. We have done Bray twice and each time on the second day squeezed in a pub - Hinds head, the crown or the royal oak ( which I just saw has gone 😞)

Also highly recommend Midsommer house in Cambridge

Thanks everyone. Some of these are already on my list so good to see that people like them enough to recommend. I know places get booked up months and months in advance, hence why I am thinking about Christmas in August!! To be fair I might ask for one of these from DH as well, they look too good to only do one of them.

The Horse and Jockey Pub in Manton is an awesome place for eating, drinking, and hanging out. The Pub is a traditional country-style pub which gives you all the feel and charm character of English pubs. The staff at The Horse and Jockey is very friendly and respective in nature. The pub prepares fresh food for the customers and also offers quick meals like chicken burgers, chips, and peas with butter. The pub has a beautiful campsite where you can boot your camp and even park your motorhome for camping.

Is the Horse and Jockey affiliated with Steeles Pots and Pans?

The Newt in Somerset, Osip in nearby Bruton for dinner... no.1 Bruton has lovely rooms too.

The Newt has a 'garden day' experience that included food, might be worth looking at too if the hotel cost is prohibitive (££££££!!!)

Whitney168 · 09/02/2022 18:13

I am chuckling at the thought of chicken burgers, chips and peas quite hitting the OP's original brief ...

Where did you end up going, @SummaLuvin?

Hereforthedramaz · 09/02/2022 18:18

The Pig in the New Forest? Amazing food and hotel and the surroundings are lovely for strolling etc.

@Whitney168 went with Le Manoir in the end, and loved it, very special. I do love a burger and chips! But they would have to be pretty darn special for me to travel for!!! 😂

Someone up thread mentioned Sat Bains, I had made a note of them and looked them up myself and was impressed and intrigued, and hoping to go in the future. However, since then I have see a number of things calling into question treatment of his staff, intimidation, bullying, and abuse. I would rather miss out on the best food in the word than support that.

Can’t go wrong with Le Manoir!
