Were to look for a last minute UK break

After thinking that we would not be able to get away this summer, and therefore not having anything booked, my husband now looks like he is able to get a couple of days off work next week.

I have been looking for anywhere at all, ideally near the coast but not essential, within approx 2-3 hours of Oxford. I have been looking on airbnb, expedia, trivago etc, and the majority of things that come up seem to be Travelogues etc, or glamping - which I am not sure I can persuade the family to do.

Is there anywhere I should be looking for any late availability through cancellations? Should I be phoning hotels directly to see if they have any late availability?

Or is it really just to late and I have no hope?

Any advice would be welcome!

I'm interested in this too. Hoping in particular for a website where people who can't go on their holiday could post availability so you know where to look!!

I'm more after self catering or camping but I've used laterooms.com for hotels before

Apparently Cornwall/Devon is rammed, so perhaps South Wales/Pembrokeshire.

I've been looking at hoseasons, who have some last minute woodland lodges/cottages.

Also there are a couple of sites that do static caravans for hire, but often have lodges too. One is something like UK caravans 4 hire, but I'm sure if you google it it will come up.

Also farmstay.co.uk may have something.

Thanks for the tips - I will continue looking today!

How old are your dc OP?

What about booking a premier inn or Travelodge somewhere? They usually have availability

A quick check on Cottages.com, which is huge, suggests only one reasonable option, in Beverley, Yorkshire, very slightly further away than you’d like. If you do go for it, there’s a MN 7% discount code I think. If you’re not looking for a full week and the week’s already started then you might be best phoning up Cottages.com and Sykes in person and seeing if anything’s available for part weeks.

Herefordshire. No coast but the breathtaking countryside makes up for that. If you stay in Hereford (where the mappa mundi exhibition at the cathedral is fascinating), there’s a leaflet at the TI centre that gives a route through the county, going through every village with a church (all of which are completely different).
Will probably sound very boring Grin but outside of the Applecross route in Scotland it’s the most beautiful road trip we’ve done (many).

I'm going to Oxford on holiday next week.....and I'm from Beverley!! Which recommend coming here OP. It's lovely Smile

That air bnb is very close to my house. Lots to do here, near the coast (although some parts are much nicer than others) and Hull is actually quite nice in the sun Wink

Menai Cottages have some availability if you just want 2 nights. Doesn't look that cheap though...

emmathedilemma · 15/08/2021 18:04

The big caravan site companies are worth a look - hoseasons, haven and parkdean. I was going to suggest you try Scotland as the schools go back this week but a bit far!

Living on the Nc500, it's very busy at the top. Think most of England are up on holidays!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/08/2021 18:11

Try hotels directly, pick a place and Google hotels there. If they only have one or two rooms, left they tend to sell it themselves rather than use third party sites. Also Hoseasons is worth a look. I’d also try Innkeepers Lodge and Best Western.
