Hello,
We are booked in a cottage in this area for late August.
We will have 2 kids aged 14 and 11. The cottage is close to the beach.
If anyone has suggestions of places to go and things to do that would be great!
We will be doing Snowdonia one day and Llandudno.
Thanks very much
Xx

You can hire paddle boards from a number of places in Rhosneigr which is great fun.
South stack lighthouse is interesting to go to as long as you’re capable of climbing a million steps each way!
Watching the jets take off and land at the RAF base or brilliant for an hour or two. Take a picnic. Monday to Friday only though.
Beaumaris is lovely - great castle and lovely if very busy town. Nice trinket gift type shops.
Crabbing is the highlight of our Anglesey holidays / grab a bucket, a crabbing line and some bacon and have a family competition. Excellent crabbing off Beaumaris pier but all round Anglesey is good.
Anglesey outdoors does some great coasteering and kayaking sessions which are quite reasonable.
Will have a think of the other things our teens enjoyed but just dishing tea up.

Llanddwyn Island/ Newborough Warren
Parys Mountain
The church in the middle of the sea near Aberffraw
Would Zipworld be too far?

Scoobydoobydoo · 02/08/2021 10:29

Thanks for suggestions!
I have booked coasteering with Anglesey Outdoors now.
Will check the other options.
Unfortunately no crabbing for us as a family of vegans!

Lovely vegan restaurant in Bangor called Voltaire!

Zipworld in Bethesda is very popular. You're not far from Llanberis, where you can walk up Snowdon (or take a train!) and hire kayaks/paddle boards for the lake. Also Dolbadarn castle and a walk up to the old quarry.

Caernarfon is a lovely town with a fab bookshop (Palas Print) and is a great place to go to hear the Welsh language and maybe pick up a few phrases! It has a huge castle, a steam railway, and lovely walks along the Foryd.

Snowdonia is a big place. Its not just for one day. There are lots of quieter mountains you could enjoy if you intend on going up one.

Scoobydoobydoo · 09/08/2021 09:27

@MrsDThomas
Thank you! I realise there is tons to see and do in Snowdonia.
We were/are looking to attempt Snowdon via the Llanberis path as per an earlier suggestion.
However the lack of loos puts me off (plus the lockdown unfitness of our family in general)
Are there smaller mountain challenges you are able to suggest?

Bounce Below
Watkin path up Snowdon for some lovely falls and pools to swim in
Cable cars, copper mines on the Great Orme - the walk up is lovely

Saisong · 09/08/2021 09:54

Copper Mountain is an amazing place to visit - like a lunar landscape. It includes a museum in Amlwch. Also in Amlwch is a fascinating cove (called Amlwch Creek) with a precarious walk hacked into the rock - you can get down to the sand when the tide is out. Amazing views. The port is also nice.

Lovely beaches to visit at Treaddur Bay, Lligwy, Cemaes and Benllech - many more of course but those are good. Oh and Cable Bay - but parking can be cramped/pricey. Fabulous walk along the headland though to the burial chamber.

At Penrhos there is a nature reserve with beautiful walks, make sure to get to the end where there is a secluded beach that looks like the Caribbean. Good cafe too (at the car park)

Plas Newydd is worth a visit if you have NT membership.

Menai Bridge is worth a visit. We park by the Jade Village Chinese on the outskirts then take a walk down to the very picturesque St Tysilios church (on its own island), where you have great views of both bridges. Then you can walk along the Belgian Promenade under Menai bridge into the town, eventually circling back to the car park.

Beaumaris is totally worth a visit, including the castle. If you carry on driving out past Beaumaris to Penmon you come to the Priory with its amazing dovecot and ancient well. You can then take the toll road out to the lighthouse (well worth it) the beach is pebbly, but the views are good and there is a cafe. If you are feeling very adventurous then there are fast rib rides from Beaumaris out to Puffin Island to see seals and puffins (there are slower more sedate boats too).

At Holyhead, although the town is nothing special, you do have the country park with walks up the mountain, plus the breakwater itself which you can walk along and is brilliant for crabbing.

Other walks include the Dingle in Llangefni, which is a boardwalk in places - you can explore the old railway and walk through the 'gorge' to get to the reservoir at the end. There are red squirrels in the woods.

Look out for the Giants Stepping stones on the river Braint near Newborough. Parking is tricky though - don't drive down the access track, walk from further. Of course Newborough also has an incredible beach, and a fabulous walk to Llanddwyn - which you can cross to when the tide is out (worth doing so check the timings). Also red squirrels in the woods behind.

This is only a small number of things to do on the island. I haven't even started on what else is on the mainland. We'll be on the island next Saturday - I can't wait!

@saisong and others who have taken time to reply

You could try Moel Eilio accessible from Llanberis. There is a loop you can do which is lovely, less strenuous and you can still see lots, same views,

www.mudandroutes.com/routes/moel-eilio-circular-walk-from-llanberis/

Mawr is also a good one, its accessible from the Nantlle valley or Rhyd Ddu

MrsDThomas · 09/08/2021 16:17

Sorry mynydd mawr, also known locally as elephant mountain

Funf · 11/08/2021 20:26

Its a fantastic area and compact too so not loads of driving
Some good ideas here
www.donthibernate.co.uk
Betws-y-coed
Now whilst the waterfall is good, Fairy Glen and The Conway Falls Cafe are much better about 5 mins drive away and 5 mins apart.
Some info here
www.donthibernate.co.uk/route-2-m56-m62-to-llandudno-the-most-scenic-route/

Aber falls is a must but go early to get a parking space
www.donthibernate.co.uk/waterfalls-of-north-wales/
The Enochs for Dinner
enochs.co.uk

Llandudno
Personally I wouldn't bother with the tram, drive up in the car and come back via the Toll road, I think its £3
www.visitconwy.org.uk/things-to-do/marine-drive-p277321
Nice food places in or near Llandudno
homecookin-llandudno.co.uk
www.gonorthwales.co.uk/food-and-drink/the-beach-cafe-bar-p396581
You can go to this place via the toll road as it brings you to llandudno's other beach, many people dont realise it has two

www.westshorebeachcafe.com

Look at this route and do it in reverse, Rhos is nice good chippy and Italian, Angel bay is a must.
www.donthibernate.co.uk/route-1-llandudno-from-m62-m56/

llandudno also has a ski slope
www.jnlllandudno.co.uk

A few ideas further North from Conwy about 20-30 mins drive
2 miles away from the hustle and bustle its a different place
Dyserth Falls
Prestatyn Roman Villa
The Funship Mostyn ( you need to explain the story as to how and why its there and explain one mans determination.)
Prestatyn view point
mapio.net/pic/p-37228769/
Good pub food next to it
eagleandchild.com

I would also set time a side and go to Criccieth, Llanbedrog, Abersoc etc on the Llyn Peninsular, make a full day of it
Call at Porthmadog for breakfast

Go here for your evening meal on the way back, best to book
