Somewhere to stay between Glasgow and Skye

Ifonlyiweretaller · 18/07/2021 21:20

We're travelling from North West of England up to Skye and want to break the journey somewhere north of Glasgow. We want two nights wherever this may be, and want to treat ourselves to a really good hotel that has some nice local places to visit too. (We have stayed at Loch Lomond and done the Jacobite railway tour before so do t want to go there again).

Has anyone any suggestions? Any unusual hotels / castles hiding away that I don't know about ?

I am rubbish at this sort of research, so if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Pitlochry has nice hotels and is the right sort of distance and route

Mountaingoatling · 18/07/2021 21:31

Or Glencoe

Thanks Mountaingoatling. Had a look and no hotels that fit our brief available in those areas. We're happy to spend a bit more to find something a bit different but has to be hotel, not apartment etc.

I know we've left it late so maybe we need to spread the net wider? We don't mind how long we travel to get to the location, but have to be on Skye to catch a ferry by 1pm on the day we leave the hotel.

Any other ideas from anyone?

Loch Fyne?

Zhx3 · 18/07/2021 22:20

Tarbert/Loch Fyne is a scenic place to stop en route. We stayed at the Stonefield Castle Hotel which I think was badly damaged by fire, so not sure what it's like now?

Think that was the Cameron House Hotel.

Are you catching a ferry at Uig? Takes a while to get there through Skye from the bridge.

I’m not sure about good hotels but Loch Garry is a very lovely spot. Or Glenelg? No posh hotel but the Glenelg inn is very good.

The Holly Tree Hotel at Kentallen near Glencoe is worth a look. Lovely waterfront location, swimming pool, seafood restaurant etc, and half way between Oban and Fort William so plenty to do in the area

Cornwallnewbie · 18/07/2021 23:16

Maybe a slight detour but not too far from Oban, Kilmartin Castle kilmartincastle.com.

Oh yes, might have been. Stonefield Castle was OK, but a bit dark I remember. Very close to the Loch though, which more than made up for it!

Thanks everyone - I'll start investigating the suggestions so far.
Thanks to the poster who mentioned the time to get to the ferry port - I
Hadn't thought of that!

Maybe pop over to Scotsnet and ask there too. But don't underestimate the time you'll need to drive to and through Skye, especially allowing for caravans and motorhomes ahead of you.

Ohdeariedear · 19/07/2021 23:23

If you are going to Uig you really need to stay on or near Skye to make it across the island for 1pm without a panic! Uig is always further than you think…

The Glenelg inn is quirky (or used to be) and you could get the teeny ferry over to Skye from there. Maybe somewhere in Plockton, it’s very pretty?

Ohdeariedear · 19/07/2021 23:25

Kinloch Lodge in the bottom corner of Skye is supposed to be excellent, and you could catch the ferry there from Mallaig which will save some driving miles.

Cornwallnewbie · 19/07/2021 23:33

Glenelg then over on the old ferry would be a lovely trip.
I travel to Uig quite frequently for a project. The traffic in Skye can get really bad and there are various bottlenecks never mind the slow motorhomes that won’t let you past. Last month there were a couple of bad road works as well so be really generous in the time you allow for getting to Uig.

Cornwallnewbie · 19/07/2021 23:34

I would actually stay in Skye if you can. There are lots of nice hotels.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 19/07/2021 23:44

Kilcamb Lodge in Ardnamurchan is lovely. You can get the ferry from round by Kilchoan.

RunnerDown · 20/07/2021 00:00

On Skye itself there is the Flodigarry Hotel www.hotelintheskye.co.uk/ which is near Uig if that’s where your ferry is from. The three chimneys on Skye is lovely but very pricey.
Agree that Plockton is a beautiful place to stay plocktonhotel.co.uk/

Gosh - loads of replies, thank you. We are actually meeting friends on Skye to travel over to Uist. I'd really not thought about the why's and wherefore's so need to have a proper think about this...thanks for all comments thus far.

Well, taking ob board everything about the length of time to travel to Uig on Skye, we narrowed our search to be nearer to the Isle itself. Many places are fully booked, however I found Tingle Creek Hotel in Erbusaig which is 10 mins from Plockton and very close to Skye. It looks to be in a gorgeous location (as are most hotels in Scotland to be fair!) and the reviews sound amazing.
Thanks so much for everyone's advice, it has helped massively!

That looks like a perfect solution OP, it is really very pretty up there. Hope you have a great time.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 06/09/2021 22:18

Holiday completed - thanks to everyone for suggestions. We had a fabulous time, mostly spent walking on the stunning white beaches of north and South Uist, and eating amazing seafood on the islands.
The stop off in Erbusaig helped, although the return trip was pretty tiring as we had to do the whole journey in a day. Over 8 hour drive from Uig on Skye to get home.

well worth the trip though, a stunning part of the world.
