A week in Glasgow?

I've never been to Scotland before. Can't afford the prices being charged for Cornwall etc so thought I might chance something completely different - the idea being to use the apartment as a base, and also visit Edinburgh. That's as far as I have got though (only thought of this today), so before I book it, is it a terrible idea? If not, where are some must see places we can drive to from Glasgow?

I was originally looking at Prestwick, and a Scottish friend laughed when I ran it past her, so I thought I would ask where nobody knows me...

Glasgow is quite a good centre for a first trip to Scotland. Loch Lomond is only about twenty miles away, so easily reached, there is a train service to get there, and boat trip on the loch, a full day out.
If you have a car, a trip down the Clyde estuary would be good, especially if you live inland. There might be a river cruise or ferry trip you could take.

It’s a few years since I’ve been to Glasgow, but things I remember fondly are the wonderful Botanical Gardens, a walk along Kelvinside where we saw woodpeckers, several really good art galleries (Pollock House was one), general interest museums one was the People’s Palace in an old carpet factory built as a replica of the Doges Palace in Venice (I think I’ve got that right!).

Also, it’s a city of lovely architecture and interesting wrought ironwork, so don’t forget to look up at the balconies. Then there’s the spectacular Erskine Bridge, it used to be lit up at night and was quite a sight.

You would easily fill a week there, you would lots to do.

If you’re having it as a base, Prestwick’s not a stupid idea.

Glasgow is a brilliant place, yes I love here lol!

But plenty to do, good nightlife, good for parks etc. Message me if you need any ideas and I can help x

Glasgow is fab. Lots of nice restaurants, bars and shops if u like shopping. Museums, parks etc. The west end is nice and has more boutique independent shops. It's a fairly quick train ride to Edinburgh.

Oooh, that's brilliant, thanks for the positive responses. I have got form for booking trips and then we turn up and I realised I have massively underestimated things. I love Mackintosh, so I'm hoping to plot out a route to see some of his work in the city.

I bloody love Glasgow. The west end is lovely. Ashton gardens. The kelvingrove art gallery, botanic gardens, film theatre.

Youre not far from loch lomond or the trossachs

Take a train to Stirling and visit the castle. So much better than Edinburgh castle.

You could visit The Hill House overlooking the Clyde, and the University have recreated the interiors of CRM’s own home in Glasgow, both of those would be fascinating to see.
