Hadrian's wall - national trust or English heritage?

I'm confused! We want to go to Hadrian's wall so I'm looking at booking tickets, but it seems that there are part of Hadrian's wall that are owned by NT and parts owned by EH.

Normally we'd wander between them, but with covid we need to book and I have no clue which are the ones most interesting for us/kids.

Any advice please?

The national trust in the West Midlands are going back to normal now, have you checked it still needs booking?

greyinganddecaying · 15/07/2021 10:21

It's still saying we need to book at the moment.

I’d recommend Vindolanda and the Roman Army museum. You can get a combination ticket to both of them. This might be useful www.vindolanda.com/Pages/Category/families

Housesteads is a good place to start, good ruins and museum and you can wander along the wall from there.

You really want to go to Vindolanda - the connection with people who wrote birthday party invitations and asked their mum for more socks on the wooden postcards is just amazing

I was also going to say Vindolanda. It's magical.

What do you want to book? If you want to see the wall and walk along it, just find a carpark and go. The sill is a good point to walk a stretch of the wall and see sycamore gap.

As far as I'm aware, the NT own sections of the wall, but it's free to just walk along it (other than any car parking charges). Vindolanda is owned by a trust and is probably the best site to visit. Birdoswald and Houseteads are both run by English Heritage.

If you want to see / walk alongside the wall - then park at Steel Rigg carpark or at The Sill & walk east following the wall - you’ll find Syacmore Gap which is lovely.

For Roman history & great stuff for kids, check out Vindolanda & Roman Army Museum. They are digging at Vindolanda again which is always fascinating to watch.

If you can get country life butter they have 2 for one codes on the packs for English heritage sites.
I got a pack last week from tesco but not sure if it's all packs or just a limited time offered

Thank you all - I'm making a note of all of these recommendations Smile

Don’t forget to go to the Twice Brewed Inn for refreshments. It’s next to the Sill, which is the Northumberland National Park centre and youth hostel. It’s between Vindolanda and Steel Rigg.

Sycamore Gap (Robin Hood tree) is between Housesteads and Steel Rigg.
