UK destinations that are unlikely to appeal to families and therefore likely to have accommodation available over school hols

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we need to move out of our home for a few weeks over the summer. Just when we have no children in education so thought we could holiday outside school holiday period. I know popular holiday locations are booked out, wondering what areas are likely to have availability. : we'd be looking at 'home from home' type accommodation, with places to visit nearby, maybe some walking opportunities. We were wondering about Shropshire or similar. Happy to google for accommodation just need help identifying where to start - ie interesting areas which wouldn't necessarily attract families (to be clear - we have no problem with children or families, just thinking places not attractive to families more likely to have availability) . It doesn't matter where really as we're probably looking at being away for a month at least.
Thanks

Away from coast in less fashionable areas eg County Durham- Durham is lovely, day trips to alnmouth, Newcastle etc.

Cambridgeshire villages, but Cambridge itself is manic
Etc etc

Lovely walks in both

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/07/2021 23:22

Thank you @Foxhasbigsocks. We've spent a lot of time in and around Durham - that said, it's still an option.
Which Cambridgeshire villages were you thinking of? Both of these are the sorts of things we were thinking of, thank you. Appreciate some local knowledge so we don't end up in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do! I can't believe it having felt so smug that we can holiday outside of the school hols, this isn't really a holiday but might as well treat it as such!

We've got older kids, and I really rate staying near a city for lots of things to do. This year we're in the Clyde Valley, in countryside just outside Glasgow. We've also done Swansea Valley, North York Moors, Oxfordshire, all well under an hour to a reasonable sized city. Nice balance of being in the country, but not being bored if the weather limits outdoor stuff a bit.

North York moors lovely but quite touristy in parts the last two years with Oxfordshire the cotswolds bits and Oxford can be very busy

Will have a think about where in Cambridgeshire

Lincolnshire another unfashionable county - not sure why though!

Thank you @TheTurn0fTheScrew, I like the sound of those, and hopefully not so popular that we will still be able to find accommodation.

Anything North of Cambridge/Fens should be quiet. Or West Norfolk, it’s drivable to the coast (or Cambridge/Ely/Bury St Edmunds) but families wouldn’t normally choose to stay there.

Have you considered registering with trustedhousesitters or similar. I have a friend who is staying in a swanky cottage next to the main residence in exchange for keeping the place lived in, feeding chickens and cats. She's doing it for 5 weeks while the owners visit family.

What about Malvern or the area a bit further south around the wye valley? Malvern in particular is very popular with walkers but not really those with young families but it’s. great area with lots to do and some lovely accommodation options.

Will look into that, thank you

Just booked for the Cairngorms, was surprisingly reasonable- think it's because there's so many options there. Edinburgh was also cheaper this summer

Shropshire is fab, but most people dont know that, just look at Industrial type areas as they dont attract tourists but are often near nice places.

Frinton on sea maybe. No attractions as such . Just lovely beach and a street of cafes and restaurants but no arcades, playgrounds, crazy golf etc which may keep families away.

If you're close enough, Scottish holidays finish in the week of 9th August so there should be availability in the central belt - Stirling, Clyde Valley, possibly East Dunbartonshire/Falkirk/West Dunbartonshire which are a bit less obviously touristy but still nice and very central

We spent a week in Herefordshire once. Hereford is a nice city. Surrounding countryside is good, including the Black Mountains. Visited Hay-on-Wye, Ledbury & Abergavenny. Not that far to Birmingham or Cardiff if you want to visit a bigger city.

I am in Yorkshire which is huge and full of tourist hotspots. But there are also cities and towns which are a good base but not on the tourist list. Places like Bradford, Halifax, Hudderfield and Wakefield would give you access to the Pennines/Dales/North York moors and coast. I also have a soft spot for Hull but it is not as well connected. All these cities are fine, some less salubrious areas which you may want to avoid, but people live in them quite happily and commute to Leeds, Manchester etc. Also good links for trains north to Edinburgh and South for London via Leeds or York.
