What to do in the Eden Valley

We are going to the Eden Valley for the first time this summer. We are in a cottage about 30 mins south east of Carlisle, right on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. It will be me, my husband, our 8 year old daughter, and my in-laws.

I was wondering whether anyone had good tips for activities/days out within about an hour or so drive from Croglin. We will have driven a considerable distance to get there in the first place, so would really rather not be driving for hours each day, however my research suggests that most of the things we are considering are probably at least around an hour away.

We are already considering:
Lowther Castle and Gardens
Kayak hire on Ullswater
Walk/picnic at Talkin Tarn country park
Carlisle for the day (anything recommended here?)
Keswick for Puzzling Place and maybe a self guided treasure hunt?

We aren’t necessarily planning on doing all the things on the list, very open to other suggestions, or if you think something isn’t worth doing I would be interested to hear that.

Can anyone recommend any nice spots for a swim/paddle? I know it is going to be busy with it being height of summer, so if there are any hidden gems that aren’t a million miles away from us, would love to know please! Many thanks.

Lady’s Caves is a popular wild swimming spot.
There’s quite a lot to do at Gretna Green - a museum, large foodhall, maze, sculpture garden, a choice of places to eat and a play area.
If you go to Keswick, combine it with a trip to Whinlatter and when you go to Ullswater also go to Aila Force.

The Eden Valley is the perfect destination for anyone who loves exploring nature. It’s one of the most beautiful places in England and has an abundance of things to do, from hiking to biking. You can even go horseback riding!

Lowther castle is brilliant, the play ground is one of the best I have ever seen.

Don't forget the Pencil Museum at Keswick.

Thank you for all the responses!
@Fivemoreminutes1 Lacy’s Caves sounds like a good shout! I had also thought about Aira Force previously, so thank you for reminding me. And that walk you linked to looks perfect, that’s about the right sort of distance my daughter will manage before whinging! Hadn’t even considered Gretna Green, so will look into that!

We are looking forward to Lowther Castle, I think the playground will be much enjoyed!

And I love the sound of a pencil museum, I love random things like that 😂

Thanks again everyone. And I’ll welcome
More suggestions if anyone has any!

Rheged in Penrith
Carlisle Castle, Tullie House museum
Bit further afield but the Roman forts along Hadrian's Wall (Birdoswald might be closest)
River Eden walks
