Airbnb been sold. Price rocketted!

I’m furious. Had an Airbnb booked for August months ago. Owner has messaged tonight to say they have sold the property, it’s still an airbnb, asked me to cancel my booking and rebook.

Except the owners have it up for 2.5 times what I originally paid. Have asked them to honour the original booking price but no response as yet.

Fuming. Have I any recourse here? With such little notice other properties and hotels are ££££. There’s a reason I booked early! 😡

try hoeseasons dont pick a specific area expand your search area a little

Celandines · 07/07/2021 09:51

Have you already cancelled it? If not you could leave it as I believe they are penalised for cancelling themselves. It might be a ruse to get you to cancel and pay more. They might not have really sold it

All the best and omg

NavigatingAdolescence · 07/07/2021 12:26

Can’t change location - have other things booked. And its in a city.

Hope you find something! This is one of the reasons I don't use AirB&B.

DelphiniumBlue · 07/07/2021 12:31

They will be in breach of contract if they don't honour the booking. This is their problem to sort out. Do not cancel- if there's cancelling to be done they need to do it.

Have a look at VRBO they are in my opinion brilliant.

Has definitely been sold. Reviews confirm it was up for sale and then under new ownership.

I haven’t cancelled it - I suspect they get penalised if they cancel and are trying to to avoid that.

New owners have offered a reduction to just under 1.5 times original cost and stressed that there will be even more upgrades to the property by the time we stay there. Only thing anywhere near has less bedrooms/facilities and is still more expensive.

Ho hum.

Leave them to it and let them make a move but start looking for a back up plan.

Canigooutyet · 07/07/2021 12:47

Contact airbnb and ask them if it still has to be honoured.

FAQs suggest not

Contact AirBnB. They have rules around this- I say this as a host.

We had an Airbnb cancel on us last minute the year before last, the only place still within budget at that late notice was in much worse town and location, 3rd floor flat in a council block (it was a nice flat but it was not quite the Victorian terraced we'd originally booked). Wouldn't trust Airbnb again as there's no recompense.

NavigatingAdolescence · 07/07/2021 16:24

New owners have accepted another booking for my dates after I told them I would get back to them today. Absolutely fuming.

How can they have done that? Did they cancel you?

iamalighthouse · 07/07/2021 16:27

Air bnb is a terrible idea

New owners emailed me the reduced price last night. I said I would get back to them today. In the meantime someone has swiped those dates. They say it’s “first come first served”.

I have a confirmed booking with the person who no longer owns the property, who didn’t think to mention when I booked in Feb that it was on the market. Bookings aren’t transferable apparently so was asked to cancel by former owner and rebook with new owners. I thought they might have blocked out the dates while I decided.

Am awaiting advice from Airbnb re matching the price, but that’s pointless now. Have told the old owner they can cancel the booking as it’s them that’s made it unavailable.

I’ve never had an issue with it before

And now you've found out just how screwed you can be by it. Sad

ScribblingPixie · 07/07/2021 16:44

Airbnb fine owners who cancel - I was fined 100 dollars when I had a pipe burst & cancelled a guest last-minute. It's cheeky of them to try to get you to cancel to avoid the hit when they've let you down.

But it wasn't the new owner's booking.
SpaceRaiders · 07/07/2021 16:45

Curious how Airbnb can sanction the host, if they no longer own the property nor have an account with them.

Either way, its a pretty horrid situation to leave you in! You’re best off speaking with Airbnb, they may be able to find you an alternative and honouring the price you initially paid.

MondayYogurt · 07/07/2021 16:45

I've had at least 3 airbnbs cancel on me last minute and now refuse to use them. The stress isn't worth it.

The company is also ethically suspect - paying off rape victims, avoiding paying tax, generally pushing local housing stock out of reach for local earners.

Hope you can get it honoured.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 07/07/2021 16:48

This isn't Airbnb issue this is one of those things when a property is sold. Very frustrating for you but why would the new owners fold the dates for you when offering you a lower rate when they can let them for more? You should have accepted it immediately I'm afraid as holidays are going crazy at the moment

osbertthesyrianhamster · 07/07/2021 16:50

Of course they didn't. Why would they? If they'd posted on MN everyone would have told them to keep schtum because anything could happen wrt the sale.
