Q's re my Scotland trip next week

We are off to Scotland next week with a mixture of hotels and self-catering. We are staying in Edinburgh, the West Coast, the Isle of Harris, and then the highlands. We are planning on sightseeing, walking, eating in nice restaurants and some sports. We have our own car.

I am unsure what to pack. The weather forecast seems to be swinging between rain/ 13 degrees and then into the 20's later on in our holiday. I don't want to take too much stuff.

I am thinking perhaps walking/ hiking gear and layers with a couple of nice things thrown in for nice places to eat?

And attractions need to be pre booked, we had to book the castle.

Holyrood Palace is open but you need to pre-book. The museum is open but some exhibits are closed off and the children's section is closed off. Im assuming it's due to hands on activities they had there. Everything including restaurants in Edinburgh has to be pre- booked. Wetherspoons do walk ins but depends on available seating. With the weather we have had lately, don't think there will be any men in kilts. Definitely bring midgie cream and something for insect bites. Also watch out for Ticks, there has been an increase this year. Wear long trousers if walking through long grass, avoid sitting on logs. Check yourself if you have been in the countryside, especially where deer roam. Apart from these precautions have a lovely holiday.

layers, suncream and midge spray! I've had sunburn and trenchfoot in the space of 24 hours in the last few days so it's really hard to say.
Light layers, quick drying fabrics, comfortable walking shoes. I would bring an umbrella for Edinburgh because if it rains like it has in the last couple of days you'd be soaked from head to toe in just a jacket. It's a pretty casual city where I find people dress for the weather even when eating out so I wouldn't bring anything too fancy.
Also make sure you've planned parking if you're bringing a car to Edinburgh.

Sounds like I need to put my kilt on for the OP. Grin

Get smidge not skin so soft, only thing that works for me. For highlands take layers, can be 25 degrees or 9 this time of year, we had below zero in the Highlands one memorable camping trip in july. If you have the car, chuck everything in for all weather's then you'll enjoy yourself whatever. I pack shorts / tshirt sun cream then jeans / fleeces a light jacket and my winter jacket. For shoes go comfy!

NeverMetANiceOne · 08/07/2021 21:04

I second using Smidge, not Avon Skin-So-Soft, it's much better at repelling midgies (I live on the west coast and am very experienced in midge repelling!)
Have a wonderful time, where are you eating in Oban?

BonnieScotlandBound · 09/07/2021 06:44

We are eating at Eeusk in Oban.

Another late question, sorry.

Edinburgh Dungeons or The Real Mary Kings Close? Which is better? If I can get in.

Mary Kings Close. It is proper history all hidden underground and with actors. It is fantastic.

theadventuregoeson · 09/07/2021 11:05

Mary Kings is the real thing. The dungeon which can be done in many cities throughout the UK is pretend. If you shop at Tesco, your Clubcard points can be used at the dungeon if that helps at all.

We didn’t have actors at Mary Kings last time. Just a tour guide.

ShowMeTheSugar · 09/07/2021 13:35

Another vote for Mary Kings

Mary kings close. No question. Edinburgh dungeon is very tacky.
emmathedilemma · 09/07/2021 17:19

Definitely Mary Kings Close, the dungeons are awful!

NeverMetANiceOne · 09/07/2021 18:57

Eeusk is a great choice, have a great time. Oh and yes to Mary Kings Close over the Dungeons!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 09/07/2021 19:04

Lifelong midge magnet here. I swear by Smidge.
I believe they changed the formula of Skin So soft a few years ago.

suspectsalmon · 09/07/2021 19:14

If you have children then they need to wear a mask anywhere indoors if they are 5 or over.

Olny · 10/07/2021 21:38

Smidge is definitely better than Avon Skin So Soft.

Olny · 10/07/2021 21:40

Where are you staying in Oban and on Harris?
