Hello, looking for info on the Isle of Skye in August. Where to stay, what to do, where to eat?
Never been before but always wanted to go.
thx

I think you’ll have the best choice of accommodation in Portree, which is a great base for lots of good days out
Swim in the Fairy Pools
Explore Fairy Glen
Visit Dunvegan Castle. You can take a seal watching boat trip from there and they get surprisingly close. On a good day, nearby Coral Beach is gorgeous.
Take a boat to Loch Coruisk
Watch the Skye Pipeband (they played in the square in Portree every Tuesday evening during the summer pre-covid)
Walk up to the Old Man of Storr. Also walk the Quiraing if you’re ok with heights.
There are two whisky distillery on Skye (Talisker and Torabhaig) which you can visit.

Take midge repellant!

It’s a beautiful place though, agree with places to visit as above.

Hope you are talking about next August…. You’ve got 0 chance of getting anything this August unfortunately.

Skye is truely stunning. August is the worst time to go however, midges and tourists x20000000000

We pretty much covered the same itinerary as Fivemoreminutes1 described!

Definitely book accommodation in advance!

We went and ended up sleeping in the mini van as the midges were a nightmare! Had a tent but the swarms were really bad. Couldn't get accommodation for love nor money and it was mid-week in June.

We arrived by ferry which was gorgeous and took the bridge back.

Stunning scenery, lovely friendly people.

I'm jealous as I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Do the Glen Elg ferry, much nicer than the big one.

RampantIvy · 05/07/2021 22:02

The midges are enough to put me off going there or anywhere in the West of Scotland in August.

Managed to find the last 3 bedroom house on Isle of Skye!

Now I need restaurant recommendations please

It was 20 years ago when I went, but I stayed there twice in Kyleakin. We went to:

Dunvegan Castle
Portree
Skyeskins (tannery with lovely sheepskins)
Armadale Castle
Skye Museum of Island Life
Talisker Distillery
Fort William to Mallaig steam train trip (not on Skye but nearby)

we just drove around the whole island, stopping where we wanted to see things. They label a lot of roads as very narrow with Passing Places, but living in Devon, we are used to roads like that.

Midges are terrible I agree with PP, so go prepared.
