Tideswell Derbyshire what to do

jamimmi · 03/07/2021 00:12

Having decided for a second year that travel to our normal holiday spot of the balearic's was a bad idea we are now off to the peak district booked in haste last weekend. Self catering near Tideswell and looking for ideas on what to do. DH is sight impaired ( first holiday with no sight, it's been a sh**t 12 month's) and I have an 18 yr old and 14yr Ds&Dd. Enjoy a bit of walking but not to uneven with Dh and history so planning chatsworth and a drive to Bolsover Castle and Hardwick Hall I think. Any other suggestions for eating days out really appreciate. Does anyone have any canoeing or kayaking suggestion for the kids?? Just want us all to be able to chill a bit and I'm still amazed Ds said he'd come . Think his sister may have influenced that one.

Castleton is fairly close with the different show caves.

There’s a Go Ape at Poole’s Cavern, and together the two make a good day out.
Crich Tramway is an interesting day out.
For canoeing or kayaking, your best bet is Rapid Horizons in Matlock. While you’re in that area, definitely take a ride on Peak Rail.
There is a nice even walk at Longshaw. Cressbrook Mill to Litton Mill is also worth doing and parts of the Monsal Trail are even too.

I’m really sorry about your DH’s eyesight, and hope you have a lovely time.

Canoeing and kayaking at carsington water is excellent. Matlock (not on sea). I love wirksworth too just for the little village feel.

Another option for canoeing is Rother Valley Country Park. Ladybower has some flat walks or cycle hire. Would your DH be ok on a tandem?

The Yorkshire Bridge pub does amazing food.

Hathersage pool is definitely wirth a visit but might be fully booked. They have a good cafe too.

Obviously chatsworth estate. If you’re into outdoor swimming the river near the garden centre is a popular spot.

I hope you all have a lovely break.

For dining, I’d recommend The Cheshire Cheese Inn, The Old Nags Head, The Devonshire Arms and The Wheatsheaf

There are several old railway lines that are now bike tracks (monsal trail, Tissington trail, high peak trail etc) and most hire out bikes including tandems... Could that work for you and your husband?
Carsington reservoir for SUP board or kayak.

If you fancy a treat of fine quality foods, then look no further than the Chatsworth Farm shop, follow the signposts through the Estate past the entrance to the big house, there’s a visitors centre with a Cafe and picnic area, Pub and craft shop all within a five min walk of the car park to the farm shop centre.

MumOf21 · 03/07/2021 09:54

Take a look around Matlock Bath with all its Traditional ‘seaside’ attractions and various pavement cafes, and easy riverside walks. Weekends are also a Mecca for Motorbike enthusiasts who often meet up to show off their pride and joy from the brand new to the really old enthusiast Bikes of the past. Well worth a visit, for young and old alike.
There’s also the heritage steam engine line at Rowsley that run weekend excursions bookable in advance to ride on one of their engines down into Matlock town centre, or visit the Arkwright Mill visitor centre and Canal at Cromford, with its bookable canal barge trips .

Thank you all for some great ideas. Like the thought of river swimming for the kids and will explore the water activity ideas. He's not quite ready for a bike as his balance is still poor, but possibly one for the future.

Some other ideas- Haddon Hall opens from the 21st July and there's a new car museum at Ambergate.

We stayed in Tideswell recently.

Food -

The pizzas from T&D Exotic Teas are quite expensive but really good.

We were thinking of the Horse and Jockey for food one night but avoided after figuring out that the owner wrote the 5* reviews on TripAdvisor themselves. And their responses to bad reviews were incredibly rude! Shock

We were hoping to go to the Cheshire Cheese in Buxton one night as mentioned above, but it was fully booked, so do check in advance.

jamimmi · 03/07/2021 18:19

Thanks for the advice pizzas sounds fab. Thought the same about the horse and jocky on reading the reviews

@MumOf21 Do you have to pay to get into the Chatsworth estate to go to the farm shop?
