What to do in Windemere

JoesM12 · 27/06/2021 18:25

We're going to Windermere for a week in July. We have been before but want to try and make the most of it.
We have 2 DD's, 4 1/2 & 10 weeks old.
Because the baby is so young we can't do as much walking as we usually would.
But would still like to do some.

Can anyone recommend things to do/places to eat etc?

Tarn Howes. Lovely pram friendly path, ice cream van & near Hawkshead for pub lunch.

Take a boat trip to the southern end of the lake and then have a ride on the steam train.
There's a small aquarium there too. Its not brilliant but a little one might enjoy it.
Also Wray Castle - great for young children.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Brockhole yet. It’s heaven for children.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/06/2021 19:37

I assume the baby can be carried fairly easily in a sling or front carrier? In which case it's maybe more what the 4 yo can do which matters.

See if you can get hold of Rocky Rambles, it's got ideas for walks with kids of various ages - aimed at 6 upwards but iirc we used it earlier.

We used to go to Grizedale forest, and its sculpture trails from when DD was about that age. Brockhole on the shores of Windermere may be worth a visit, and Fell Foot at the bottom of the lake is nice if you want to hire a boat (Bowness tends to be too busy for my liking).

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/06/2021 19:41

We really liked the aquarium, the diving ducks amazed my son (who was not small).

Smartiepants79 · 27/06/2021 19:45

The world of Peter rabbit was surprisingly good when we went.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 27/06/2021 19:46

World of Peter Rabbit is terrifying, statues covered in dust. Really expensive to get in. I thought it would be delightful for small children but I was wrong. Sorry to PP who liked it.

The walk up or over Orestt Head, starts by the station, a proper climb and "mountain view" but manageable for little ones.

The open top bus to Grasmere. 599 ordinary service bus, but they use an open bus. You can get a family day ticket and get off and on as many times as you like. Stop at Bowness, Waterhead and Ambleside on the way.

Wray Castle is a fun indoor play centre on a wet day if you're NT members, but v expensive for what it is if not. There's a nice level walk along the lakeside from there too.

Nice short walk around Stockgyll Falls in Ambleside

You can walk from Windermere to Ambleside or Waterhead too and get the bus back. Either along the coffin trail or over Wansfell. Or do both and make it circular, but that's probably a long walk for a 4yo. Or start at Brockhole.

The Youth Hostel cafe at Waterhead has amazing views and decent food at a reasonable price on the way.

Brockhole has a good adventure playground. We found it best on a wet day in full waterproofs. Then you have it to yourself and mum and dad can play too Grin

Digestive28 · 27/06/2021 19:49

There’s a Facebook page - family walks and pubs in the Lake District where a family record walks they’ve been on, worth a follow.

Digestive28 · 27/06/2021 19:50

Also- it’ll be busy but if you google safer lakes parking, the national park do live updates of all the car parks so you can see which are full/nearly full which will saves a ton of hassle

Digestive28 · 27/06/2021 19:54

Allan Bank is heavenly if you make it grasmere.

JoesM12 · 27/06/2021 19:56

If in doubt, ask Mumsnet!!
Some great suggestions here. Thanks so much everyone!!

If you're confident driving, then use Wrynose and Hardknott pass to get to Ravenglass Eskdale Railway. Very cute. 4 year old might enjoy.

PumpkinPie2016 · 27/06/2021 20:19

We are lakes lovers - go every Autumn (more if we get the chance!).

Our DS is 7 now but some things we do/have done and enjoyed:

Grasmere - nice little play park there which will be good for your 4 year old. Picnic tables to sit at. It's a nice village to have a little wander around.

The Bobbin mill at (if I recall correctly Newby Bridge). Went last year and it was brilliant! Not too big but really interesting and the guide was fantastic with children and explained things to their level. Our son loved it and they let children choose a bobbin to take home.

Bit further afield (and the drive is not for the faint hearted!!) but well worth a visit is Eskdale mill. It has a working waterwheel and a small model one for children to play with outside. Again, fairly small but lovely, knowledgeable guides. Village pub there was nice for lunch.

Keswick fun pool is good and fairly cheap. Check booking arrangements with covid. Get there for the start of the session. Nice gradual entry and there is a wave machine.

Also the lake at Keswick (near the theatre) is nice for a stroll. There is also an optical illusion place at Keswick which was fun! Plus a nice park. Never had much luck eating in Keswick but the Mary Mount hotel nearby is excellent.

Park at windermere is good for kids. Bowness is nice for a stroll round but don't attempt it with a pram (voice of bitter experience!).

Threkeld mine was another good trip.

Aquarium and steam train at Lakeside are good for little ones.

Ambleside is a nice town but we haven't stopped there for a while as it's always rammed! If you're patient enough to wait for a parking space though, it's nice.

Kendal is lovely. On Wednesday and Saturday morning, the Unitarian chapel do coffee/tea/scones - all welcome.

Grizedale forest and aira force are both great.

If you're after a good meal, the Sun at Crook is highly recommended Smile

Missing the lakes having typed all that! Roll on October when I'm going Grin

World of Peter Rabbit is terrifying

I'm sorry but you need to get out more if you find the World of Beatrix Potter terrifying..
It's actually lovely - all our dc's ages 6-14 loved it (older ones were making sarky remarks as we went round but they still enjoyed it!)

Also go on a boat ride on lake Windermere - we must've done this 100 times and we still love it. Also there's a steam train at haverthwaite which is nice and there's a little shop at the station where you can buy Thomas related stuff!

Doublestar · 27/06/2021 20:25

I second Brockholes too and you can park and then get on the boat there to go to Bowness.

Serin · 27/06/2021 20:43

I'd avoid the hardknott pass at all counts, we burned our clutch out. Recovery man said we weren't the first that day!

Welshponyslave · 27/06/2021 20:53

Lowther Castle isn’t too far and it has the most amazing playground in the woods.

Yes baby will be in the carrier 🙂 We do a lot of walking etc usually so I reckon 4 yr old oils be okay with things aimed at slightly older kids.

Brick hole and fell foot sound great. Thanks 😊

Keswick pool is permanently closed unfortunately @PumpkinPie2016
The gym is still open but the leisure pool is not going to be reopened - repairs too expensive.😥 Lots of upset locally but I can't see the decision being reversed I'm afraid.
