Northumberland

I'm plotting for August 2022 and I feel like a change - due to where we live we always go to Devon/Cornwall or Wales and I've heard such good things about Northumberland.

Can anyone suggest the best location to stay in? We love castles and the sea so are easy to please!

Lovely place
Look at Bamburgh, Alnwick and Seahouses
Wrap up warm though

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/06/2021 14:50

Alnwick is lovely and has more amenities than the other choices.

Love Northumberland. Loads of great places to stay. Seahouses, Bambourgh or Warkworth on the coast, or Alnwick a bit further inland. It depends what you want. Berwick is a nice market town. We've stayed in Newton by the Sea- just a short walk from the beach (and pub!). Days out followed by evenings on the deserted beaches.

Hotcuppatea · 21/06/2021 14:55

It's beautiful up there. Take waterproofs and fleeces! I can recommend taking a trip to the Farne Islands from Seahouses and going to Alnwick for some Harry Potter fun.

We stayed here in a one of their little wooden lodges.

Wow that's a quick response!! Thanks.
@Hotcuppatea where were the lodges? I love a lodge.

Alnwick is amazing. 'Harry Potter's' castle, the poison garden and tree house walk, the gorgeous Barter Books massive second hand bookshop in the old station with a train running around the ceiling, sofas, free dog biscuits and the old station cafe open for tea.

Bamburgh castle is lovely and the beach there is silky silver sand.
You can do puffin and seal watching boat trips from Amble.

Holy Island is gorgeous and definitely worth visiting.

St Mary's Lighthouse is lovely and if you want a bit more life go to Whitley Bay Cullercoats for 'shuggy' swing boats on the beach and lovely 1950s style ice cream parlours

Northumberland is lovely. I would recommend the boat trips round the Farne Islands - we saw puffins! Barter Books in Alnwick is the most amazing second hand bookshop. If you like seafood and Portuguese food, the Craster Seafood restaurant is absolutely wonderful - and they do do food that children will enjoy too.

LarsErickssong · 21/06/2021 15:31

We normally stay in Seahouses, Beadnell or low Newton by the sea.

Must do things are Bamburgh castle, Alnwick castle and gardens and Holy island. We also like a trip to Craster and Dunstanbrugh castle, a trip to the Farne Islands and we went to see the seals at Eyemouth once which was nice. There really is so much to do we have been many times over the years and always find something different each time.

emmathedilemma · 21/06/2021 16:14

Alnmouth is great as you're only moments from the beach from anywhere in the village.

Tallpaulwho · 21/06/2021 16:20

Please stop telling people about the Northumberland coast, it's an awful place*

*I'm selfish and don't want it's beaches to get any busier. Blush

We once went on the beach at Low Newton and there were 5 other families. We'd never seen it so crowded! Grin

I grew up in Northumberland. Don't discount the inland areas such as Rothbury, Morpeth and the villages around them.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 21/06/2021 20:14

It’s a terrible place. Wide open spaces, scenery, wildlife, history and beaches everywhere. Don’t go. You’ll hate it. Especially walking along Hadrian’s Wall. And the dark skies so you can see the stars. Horrible. Keep away.

I went for the first time last year - stayed at Slaley Hall - and we’re going back this year just to check that it is indeed a place no-one should know about.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/06/2021 21:00

Cragside is a fascinating National Trust house - well worth a visit.

onalittledishy · 21/06/2021 21:03

I live in Northumberland, and completely agree - it's beautiful, and freezing!! Grin

this is a lovely video if you need inspiration...

Love Northumberland very lucky that a relative has a caravan on a fab site at Belford. We enjoy a walk along the beach at Bamburgh and have been lucky enough to spot dolphins. The Grace Darling museum is lovely to visit.
Definitely recommend Alnwick castle & garden as well as Barter Books.
Well worth completing the walk from Craster to dunstanburgh castle.
This year we are off to Berwick to explore the town walls and visit the cafe next to go outdoors. My relative took my dcs and they have raved about it.
Can recommend a visit to Beamish on the drive up, it’s not too far off the A1.

Bookmarking! I loved it as a kid.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/06/2021 12:28

I wish I lived somewhere on the Northumberland coast - I occasionally have a little browse around Rightmove, to see what would be available in our price range, if dh and I were downsizing, and decided to move away from where we are now.

Pemberleys · 22/06/2021 12:57

Beaconhill Farm is a great place place stay and good location for exploring.
