We are going without dc for two nights.....staying at Me London in the west End. Had booked theatre but that's been cancelled. Going to sky garden. Not sure what else to do....we have done most of "the sights" before so would like to go somewhere quirky or different....thinking a walking tour of bookshops and also after restaurant recommendations for something nice but not too £££

A bookshop tour sounds wonderful. Galleries are great at the moment without hordes of tourists. There's lovely exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery if you don't mind a short train ride. The Alice exhibition at the V&A is also great fun if you're into books - might be booked out though.
Maybe a wander around Spitalfields? When are you going? The newly restored Geffrye Museum re-opens soon (with a silly new name that I can't remember!) Columbia Road flower market on Sunday morning?
Your bookshop tour could take you towards the London Review of Books cafe or a detour to Honey&Co for lunch. (Have the cheesecake!)

Daunt Books in Marylebone

Brasserie Zedel is reasonably priced and a fabulous space. Nice bar too.

Dishoom

German Gymnasium do a decent set menu and it's another fabulous building

The book shop at the Wellcome Collection is another favourite.

House of Minalima in Soho
Swingers Crazy Golf (there’s one in the West End)

Thanks @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Zedel is booked! Like the sound of the wellcome bookshop could check that out going either to orfrom Kings Cross.

MinaLima looks fab but would feel terrible visiting there without DS!

I love this place....it’s an immersive experience - not sure when it reopens.

Also this old music hall .... you can visit just the bar / restaurant and have a tour of the restoration even if you don’t choose to book a show.

Have you been to Highgate Cemetery? It's great, if you like that sort of thing.

Or have a pub walk, starting at Saint Katherine's Docks and walking through Wapping and Limehouse. Not all pretty but lots of history and some great little pubs.

Sssloou · 23/05/2021 18:13

I love all of the Royal Parks - you can walk from Holland Park, through Kensington Gardens, into Hyde Park, onto Green Park and then St James Park barely crossing a road and each have lovely cafes in them.

tfl.gov.uk/modes/river/ Take a trip on the river down to Tower Bridge and pop into ancient historic river side pubs in Wapping eg Prospect Of Whitby, Town of Ramsgate.

trockodile · 23/05/2021 18:25

When are you going? Theatres are beginning to come back-Les Mis, Everybody’s talking about Jamie, Six are all on now in the West End.

newnortherner111 · 24/05/2021 09:18

The Prince Charles Cinema are doing a range of old films and seasons, which might include something of interest. It's just off Leicester Square.

DS had a great day out with friends at Greenwich recently. You can take the boat from London Eye down to Greenwich, walk past the Cutty Sark, through the gorgeous Naval College into the park up to the Royal Observatory then take the cable car over the river. If you want you can also take the foot tunnel under the Thames and come out by the most fun part of DLR which is like a driverless tame rollercoaster past the old fish market.

Some of the galleries have opened up.

You could walk along the South Bank - the buskers are back - until you get to Borough Market and have lunch there.

Chinatown and Soho were brilliantly lively the other day when we went - even just browsing the supermarkets is fun. You could have a takeaway coffee at the Algerian Coffee Shop or a rose sculpted ice cream from the place opposite (it's a chain - Amore or similar).

If you like bookshops try going up to Kings Cross to the Books on the Water floating book barge, as well as gorgeous Daunts in Marylebone.

I agree. This is one of the most gorgeous things to do in London. In Kensington Gardens you can even have tea at the palace, sort of - there's a cafe under one wing of the palace.
