What to do on wet days in north Norfolk?

Am so hacked off with the weather forecast. I’m going away, by myself in my caravan for a week’s cycling holiday. Staying near Sandringham.

No kids so not fussed about zoos, etc. I don’t really fancy going walking over the marshes in the rain though guess I could maybe wrap up a bit better than cycling.

Holkham hall is fully booked. I looked at a National trust place, blickling? It’s open, but half the house remains shut so not sure if it’s worth going.

Is Norwich worth a trip to mooch round the shops? Seems a long way from sandringham? Holt? Wells? Neither seem very big? The sea life centre at Hunstanton? Stay in bed and read a book? Cancel the week away?

I dunno what is open either

If open,my thoughts are

Good pubs. Adult time :)
Arcades in Sheringham (regression time)
Woodlands leisure centre: decent pool
2-3 hrs: Amazona zoo, Cromer, their crocodile hall may be open
Cromer museum (half hour, Mammouths!)
Steam train Holt to Sheringham (2-3 hrs)
Felbrigg & Sheringham CPark both have a lot of paths under mature tree cover to wander on
Tank museum (Muckleburgh, up to 4 hours)
There's an aviation museum at Norwich, actually

How far can you cycle; on or off road?

CovidCorvid · 17/05/2021 23:14

I can cycle 40 miles on road but am a bit of a fair weather cyclist.

Sandringham house is closed or I might have had a poke round there. Museum of the broads is closed.

Don’t fancy sitting in a pub on my own.

Bloody weather! Will check out sheringham and felbrigg....thanks. Steam train might be a possibility.

Holt has loads of independent shops. Worth a mooch.

Burnham Market has some lovely shops, as does Blakeney - wander round the back streets - lunch at a local pub.
Check if Langham Dome is open (probably have to book), ditto Langham Glass (in Fakenham). A seal trip from Morston (not so much to see the seals as to get out onto the water and blow away cobwebs),.
Sheringham Park beautiful this time of year, despite the rain.
Norfolk is renowned for its churches.
Sheringham “Mo” museum.
Holt has some good shops.

Wells shops are ok, and if you go there, head for the lanes near the church - The Buttlands - some “quaint” houses and alleys there.
See if Holkham Hall is open (Adnams shop nearby as is an old-fashioned gentleman / ladies’ “fitters” - if you fancy trying on a shooting jacket!)

Thank you, think I will have a mooch round some of the different villages and their shops. Will look up Langham dome and glass. Seal trips are out as I puke non stop on boats.

There used to be a really good radar museum in that neck of the woods (Coltishall?) which has some really interesting Cold War stuff. That might be open and is well worth a mooch.

CovidCorvid · 18/05/2021 07:20

Thank you, the radar museum looks interesting.

I love going to the Sealife centre, it's really relaxing. There's also Norfolk Lavender which has a good tearoom.
King's Lynn is close and has a cinema, if you fancy watching a film.
Fakenham is quite nice to visit.
Pensthorpe Park is open Wednesday to Sunday.

PerpetualStudent · 18/05/2021 07:48

King’s Lynn also has the county’s oldest working theatre (Guildhall) which you can get a guided tour round and two museums (if you love a slightly naff town museum - I do!)

A bit left field but if you like Guinea pigs - I do - ....

Norwich is good for a visit. I agree that the Lanes is the most interesting area. The Castle museum is open (apart from the keep which is having a new roof) and the Cathedral is open.

I've got tickets for this Grayson Perry exhibition which I'm going to in my lunch break on Wednesday www.nua.ac.uk/events/all/grayson-perry-the-vanity-of-small-differences/

Shiki and Baby Buddha are good for eat in food.

Lots of really good street food available on the market but probably not great in the rain! Still worth a visit for nice food to take home for dinner too, Bread Source, Cuppie Hut and Walsingham Farm Shop particularly recommended
