Has anyone done the full walk from coast to coast? Really tempted by the packages that set you up in hotels along the way.

We did it diy many years ago - really enjoyed it. If I did it again I'd definitely consider the luxury of luggage transport / accommodation arranged for me.

Good to know thank you. I think I would definitely go with the luggage transport.

This is something that DH would love to do, but he would need to stay in B and Bs and have luggage transported (he uses a CPAP machine at night). We watched the Robson Green programme about it recently. I didn't know that there were packages for this.

Off to google.

I hadn't realised about the packages till I googled looking for info about the actual walk. It's a great idea. Me and my sister are now hoping to do it next year.

This is my dream holiday!

We did it walking and camping in 4 days carrying all of our stuff.

We started at the end of the sea wall at Tynemouth and had a night in a hotel in Newcastle, then did the other nights camping.

If we were to do it again we would take 7 days.

It was great - really enjoyed it. The best bits were the wild country up by Steel Rigg.

Don't rely on shops/pubs/tea bars etc. being open and check the tide times as there is a tidal causeway approaching Bowness On Solway.

Also check bus times to get back from Bowness and hold on tight - the driver was some sort of maniac.

Did it about 6 years ago, staying in hotels, B&Bs. We did it quite slowly (8 days) and stopped off often to look at Roman forts and Lanercost and a detour into Corbridge etc. Really enjoyed it - May, weather was good (I think we had one morning of drizzle). We didn't bother with the baggage transfer but we travel really light and tbh you're rarely far from some sort of civilisation. It's a 'civilised' walk - none of this 200 mile, Southern Upland Way slog! Friends did it in September and incorporated a visit to the dahlia nursery at Heddon.

The bit along the Solway Coast is good for birds and we saw deer and badgers, hares.

I’ve done a chunk of it with a company who moved luggage etc - Contour Holidays, would certainly recommend them but there are a few operators when you have a look.
Have a think if you really want to do the extreme west and east bits. We didn’t have time so booked the middle bit and to be honest found that ideal.
If you go with a company the B&B/hotel will either give you dinner or point you in the right direction...we got a lift from a son in law to and from a really decent pub one night as his MIL (lovely lady) didn’t do evening meals.
They will all do you a cracking packed lunch for not a huge charge, they knew they’re catering for walkers
