London travelodge tips

Hi I was hoping for some wisdom from any locals or frequent visitors to London. I am taking my daughter to see a show in London in the autumn and due to the show dates moving the matinee is now on a Sunday and the times don’t work with trains, so we’re going to have to stay over the night before. (travel from NW) I hadn’t budgeted for this. I was wondering if any of the travelodges that are slightly further out from the centre (hence the cheaper ones!!) are convenient for getting the tube in?
I know I can research myself and am just being lazy Blush but if anyone has any recommendations it might save me evenings spent trying to marry up the tube map with a road map. Any help or tips would be much appreciated. Thanks.

We’ve stayed at Southwark Travelodge several times for shows. You either get the tube from Southwark via Green Park or walk to Waterloo or depending which theatre it is, it’s quite a nice walk across the bridge to Charing Cross.

However last October when we went to the Sunday matinee of Songs for a New World we found a really cheap deal at Doubletree Hilton London Kings Cross (we come from North Midlands/North West too)

Comefromaway · 10/04/2021 11:45

Check out the Kensington area hotels too. It’s very easy to get to both the Victoria theatres & the Leicester Square ones from there too and they are usually cheaper.

Have a look at the Holiday Inn chain - they have some very close to tube stations in zone 3/4 eg Colliers Wood (south end of the Northern line, so quick into Leicester Square for theatres) which might be cheaper (but factor in the cost of the tube ticket).

sandgrown · 10/04/2021 11:48

Not sure on distances but we have always found London city Travelodge cheap at weekends.

Poppytroll · 10/04/2021 11:53

Thanks all, I’ll check these out tonight.

I'd recommend the Holiday Inn Express. They're reasonably priced, and if you put
'Holiday inn express London' into google it will bring them all up on a map with the prices, so you can check where they're based on prices that's suitable for you.

Comefromaway · 10/04/2021 17:52

Which theatre is it (then I can perhaps recommend areas based on easy tube line access)

Try the Premier Inns, too - if you are booking far in advance you can get some great bargains.

They also have Premier Inn Hubs - very tiny rooms, but in great central locations.

Planespotter · 10/04/2021 18:15

Premier inns are unbeatable IMO and far superior to the other chains for similar money.

If you don't mind an hour on the tube, you can get great bargains at Heathrow, at lots of hotels not just premier inns but check transport carefully as some are not actually that close to the airport. For premier inns, the Terminal 4 hotel is right next to the tube. Bath Road and T5 hotels are bus then tube so add time to the journey.

Also convenient is Jury's Inn next to Hatton Cross Tube.

London public transport is so good that as long as you've got a hotel near a bus or tube you'll be fine Smile

Comefromaway · 10/04/2021 18:16

The Premier Inn hubs are ok if you don’t mind sharing a bed.

Comefromaway · 10/04/2021 18:16

I’ve had some great Premier Inn prices in the past in Kensington.

Pl242 · 11/04/2021 18:18

There is a premier inn in Southgate, a north London suburb. It is right opposite the tube. On the Piccadilly line and can take you straight into the west end.

LockdownWine · 11/04/2021 18:19

Sometimes the Covent Garden travelodge is v cheap and super convenient !

fizbosshoes · 11/04/2021 18:23

My travel lodge tip is dont book one! Weve stayed in various premier inns and found them fine, once made the mistake of booking travel lodge instead (it was same price as premier inn) TL took basic to a whole new level! There was literally a bed and 2 shelves that acted as bedside tables, and that was about it. I know they arent meant to be luxurious but it really was super basic.

Susie477 · 11/04/2021 18:25

In normal times, some central London hotels offer ‘secret deals’ on Lastminute.com. They offer v.cheap rates ‘under the counter’, but you don’t get to find out where exactly you’re staying until you have booked. I have had some bargain stays at the Doubletree in South Kensington and Hilton in Holland Park for £50-60 per night.

Poppytroll · 12/04/2021 08:59

Thank you for all these tips. Some are exactly what I was looking for- perhaps a way out of London but if across the road from the tube station it doesn’t really matter does it?

I would always favour Premier Inn over Travelodge too. If you're on the Manchester - London train then it stops at Milton Keynes central and there's 2 travelodges, a Jury's Inn and Holiday Inn a couple of blocks from the station if the trains would work for getting you into London the next morning.

the Excel Centre (Docklands) based Travelodge/Premier Inn, and one brand new posh one very near Liverpool Street (London City?) were cheap in late 2019, even near Christmassy busy times when I last used them. Mostly, the Excel one is not regularly over full. Feels a bit out of the way but the DLR is easy to use to link up to places there.

Depends where you are going but both Stratford and Liverpool Street offer good tube links with a likely 20-30 minute time allowance.

There is also the rfsk.org which is a more lovely proposition in many ways, a little more expensive.

lalafafa · 13/05/2021 18:52

This is opening at Manor House soon, straight across the rd from the tube, Piccadilly line, easy access to the Victoria line too. 30 mins to south ken for all the museums or Piccadilly Circus.

Southgate premier inn is new (air con) and very cheap and very near the underground station. Half an hour max into the centre on the underground.
Premier inn Wimbledon Broadway is also cheap, new premier inn so it has air con and a very nice breakfast. Very close to the underground, feels really safe. 20 minutes to Waterloo

thenorthernluce · 16/05/2021 21:58

Premier Inn Archway is a good bet - right on the Northern Line, zone 2, straight trip to Leicester Square, and easy to get to from Euston (assuming that’s the terminus as you’re coming from NW). It’s also 3 stops to Camden Town, which young people tend to like.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/05/2021 22:03

Easy hotel... Owned by easyJet I believe. Just bring your sunglasses for orange overload...

Shmithecat2 · 16/05/2021 22:06

Which train station are you arriving at in London?

Queenie6655 · 16/05/2021 22:08
