Other than Devon or Cornwall .... as I'm sure they are going to be even busier than normal this year.... our children are 7 & 5 we love beaches ( if the weather is good! )and happy with self catering caravan parks where children have access to a pool! I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of other holiday destinations 'down south' . thinking of Weymouth as a possibility but v open to suggestions. thanks in advance Mumsnetters!

@Kayjay2018 we are going to Swanage next week Grin any suggestions of places we should go or things to do?

Kayjay2018 · 15/04/2021 15:03

@ChocOrange1 crabbing in Swanage, coffe and cake at durleston, if you fancy fossil hunting then Kimmeridge is lovely and they have a fossil museum too, then for something different there is Tyneham which the residents had to leave for the military to proactive for day and were then never allowed back. There is also Monkey World, the tank museum, Corfe castle and the steam railway. Oh and studland beach and a walk to Agglestone Rock!

Awesome thank, I was hoping there would be crabbing as we love that.
We were looking at monkey world but they want everyone over age 3 to wear a mask, even outside, so I don't want to go there with my young kids.
Tyneham sounds interesting I'll have a look at that :)

@ChocOrange1 here is the link for tyneham- I'm not sure it's open next week (sometimes it's still closed, I think because they still do military practice nearby) www.tynehamopc.org.uk

Crabbing is best near Swanage museum, although there are no railings so have to watch any little ones. There is also a little play park just by the seafront and a cinema(not sure they are open yet). You can walk on the pier and read all the plaques on there, which is sweet, we have one with our initials and date of our wedding as we got married in the garden of the grand hotel there.

The fish plaice is awesome for fish and chips although you need to watch out for the seagulls!

And if you like history then the beaches at studland were used to practice for the dday landings. You can access Fort Henry (not much to look at but I believe Churchill be suited there to watch goings on and I think a load of tanks got stuck/sank as they launched them in too deep water. There was a little wildflower patch by the fort(it's near a few pubs for a quick drink)
