Activity based holiday in the lakes, where best to stay?

Hello, I’m looking for recommendations for a break in the lake district in August. We want to stay somewhere with lots of activities nearby, ideally things like tree trekking, pony trekking, kayaking, those types of things. Our DC’s are 14 and 11 and like to be kept busy. We don’t mind staying a few miles out as long as we can access most places with a short drive. We will be looking to hire a cottage or apartment for the week if anyone has any tips on good places to stay, thank you very much

Pooley Bridge? There’s definitely pony trekking and lots of really nice walks/hikes. It’s a short drive to Keswick where you’ve got Honister and you can hire kayaks on Derwentwater. You’re also close to Lowther Castle which has the best play area I’ve ever been to and fab gardens to walk round.

Sounds ideal, I've never heard of there. I'll have a look and see what accommodation there is, thank you

I'd either go near Keswick or Ambleside / Windermere area BUT given how booked up places seem to be this summer you might not have much choice.

Bendrigg Lodge are doing self catering holidays for families. The accommodation may be a bit basic I don’t know, but in ‘normal times’ they are an outdoor activity centre for disabled people, so you would be doing some good in helping to keep that facility open. They’re well set up for outdoor activities of course. I don’t know any more details than those FB post so you’d have to ring them to ask for more information.

I'll definitely look, thank you

We have done similar in the past, stayed at a activity center that usually did school residential but opened for the summer to families and had a great time

Thank you

Pooley Bridge is basically at the top end of Ullswater. Th pony trekking place is just a few miles out Rookin House Activity Centre at Troutbeck , they can also arrange rock climbing and go-karting.

Keswick area would be good. There’s a couple of school type activity centres on the west side of derwent water, not sure if they offer activities to the public.

But you’ve got stuff like kayaking and SUP from a couple of places on derwent water. Mountain biking at Whinlatter forest. The via ferrata and slate mine at Honister. Obviously lots of walking. Keswick is a nice town.

The only places with pony trekking are at Pooley Bridge (Park Foot), Rookin House which are both near Ullswater and near Limefitt Park which is near Troutbeck not far from Windermere . There's kayak hire places on Ullswater (again Park Foot, but this might be residents only I'm not sure) but kayak hire is also available on Derwentwater (Keswick) and Coniston and Windermere Lakes.

Tree trekking is at Brockhole Visitor Centre and Grizedale Forest, which are a good 45-60 mins at least from Pooley Bridge, more with summer traffic.

To have everything you want close by I'd go for Limefitt Park. You've got pony trekking on the doorstep, tree trek and kayak 5 mins away. There are also 3 Haven resorts close by, White Cross Bay being on the lake between Windermere and Ambleside & one at Bowness too if you want to be near a choice of shops, restaurant etc. There's lodges on airbnb too if everything booked up through agents.

Sorry it's 3 Parkdean, not Haven.

Rookin House is not near Windermere ! Unless you are happy to go over the pass ( Kirkstone Pass ) at Ambleside and then head to head the A66.

This is the address of it.

Troutbeck, Ullswater,

I live about 15 miles away from it.

@TabithaTeacake I live locally too.. perhaps its my punctuation... or you’ve misread....
I said that the only trekking places are at Park Foot and Rookin House which are both near Ullswater, and at Limefitt Park (the latter being near Windermere)....
