We are in Scotland and would love a week away but we are struggling to find anywhere we all want to go! Kids don’t like museums or countryside walking, prefer to be entertained ie a theme park, Edinburgh dungeons (have done York too), ghost walks (done York), amusements, nice food. We have done all of Yorkshire. DH and I like discovering new interesting quirky towns, nice coffee shops, beach walks. Any suggestions?

A few years ago we had a self-catering apartment in Stratford Upon Avon. I loved exploring the town - it’s got loads of boutique cafes, tea rooms and shops, plus great walks along the banks of the Avon. From there we drove out for lots of day trips - Cadbury World, Warwick Castle, Drayton Manor, the Cotswolds and West Midlands Safari Park.

That sounds great, I’d never have thought of there! Thank you.

Alton Towers too if you're heading to Stratford upon Avon from Scotland!

minniemoocher · 01/03/2021 08:54

They might like Liverpool too - yes lots of history (national trust) but pop history so might appeal, cavern club, lots of bars etc.

I thought of Liverpool too actually but only the 20 year old drinks and only a little so wasn’t sure how much we would enjoy!

Alton towers a good shout!

Another vote for Liverpool, fantastic city, compact so easy to get around, usually lots going on, its also a great base for seeing the Wirral, North Wales etc
www.donthibernate.co.uk/liverpool/
Or for the Beatle fans
www.donthibernate.co.uk/liverpool-the-beatles/
Now this is a great place, they also do a speed boat trip with driver, they take you around the docks so the waters calm, but sections of it have no speed limits so if you are up for it its a great trip
www.liverpoolwatersports.org.uk

The other place I would look at is North Wales
Base yourselves around Conwy / Llandudno loads to see and do locally via bus or short drive
www.donthibernate.co.uk/conwy/
Its a fantastic base for seeing the area as loads to see and do within 30 mins drive

Llandudno is very nice about 15 mins drive but its a regular bus route
www.donthibernate.co.uk/route-1-llandudno-from-m62-m56/
The Conwy Valley is spectacular Bodnant Gardens, and a Go ape thing,
Go to Betws y coed to see Fairy Glen Its 30 mins from Conwy
www.donthibernate.co.uk/betws-y-coed/
Up to the Falls Cafe and you can book on this
www.go-below.co.uk

Aber Falls and Distillery
www.donthibernate.co.uk/waterfalls-of-north-wales/

It also has Fish & Chips, Bingo, funfair etc if you drive North for 20 mins to Towyn, not for every one its rammed with caravan parks, but lots of little hidden gems of clubs with evening events on, we once stayed on a Fantastic small quality caravan site 3 miles away in the country side and travelled in to a club that catered for adults and kids in the evening it was a great night

I was just about to post recommending Liverpool and North Wales/ Snowdonia but I can see @Funf beat me to it!

hamper555 · 05/03/2021 23:21

Another vote for Liverpool! We did The Beats Tour in a psychedelic Rolls Royce phantom - fab! And then Zipworld in Snowdonia

Serin · 22/03/2021 22:31

London.
So much to see and do.

Funf · 24/03/2021 05:34

Dont forget to report back and tell us what was good / bad

Salanda · 27/03/2021 09:49

How about London? There would be loads to do - wandering around different parts of town, markets, shops for you and DH and plenty of stuff for the kids - the younger areas of London would surely appeal (eg Hackney) and if you’re based in London you could do some good day trips eg to the coast - Brighton or Margate would be a good option for teens.

Doidontimmm · 30/03/2021 15:19

Will do @Funf

Don’t fancy London, we have been before and I just find it so crowded I don’t enjoy it so think I would be really anxious there right now.

Peak District is great, you could base yourself in leek which is quirky and cool and you’ve got Alton towers not too far away. Monkey park is nice for a day out no matter how old you are 😊. Lots of nice scenery and walks and pretty towns for you as well.

whataboutbob · 27/04/2021 22:12

Just to say, London is a lot less crowded than usual these days. Foreign tourists haven’t come back and far fewer office workers= quieter streets, museums etc.

Ormally · 11/05/2021 13:23

Funf, I think I would like to do all that! In roughly that order.

Hoping to visit the giant zip wire line when DD is tall enough so might be able to add your plan.

Funf · 11/05/2021 19:33

Glad you like it, its a great often overlooked area.
