Pembrokeshire base for 1 week - Solva or Pembroke

Hello,
We are 2 adults and 2 kids age 12 & 13 traveling by car.
We enjoy the coast, countryside, historic sites, towns, the kids enjoy animal parks, boat trips and similar. We are also interested in trying Kayaking and enjoy eating out.
We've narrowed down to a property in Solva and one in Pembroke.
Does anyone have an opinion on which we should pick or recommendations on places to visit while we are there?
Thanks so much.
HH

One of my favourite places to go.
I hope you can see the map I’ve attached.
The red arrows point to my favourite places to visit! Based on what you’ve said, I would go for Pembroke area I usually look for places in Stackpole/Bosherton/Manorbier.

Pembroke. It's more central, and there are more interesting places nearby. Solva is OK, but it's very small and not all that special, in my opinion.

Go to Barafundle beach and the nearby Stackpole estate. Go to Saundersfoot and walk along the coast from there to Wiseman's Bridge. Don't miss Tenby, and pretty little Amroth.

... oh, and you have to have a walk on Pendine Sands - that beach seems to go on forever.

Time40 · 27/02/2021 12:12

... oh, and if you like boat trips, you absolutely have to do the trip to Caldey Island, which is well worth seeing in itself.

Tenby is lovely, but make sure you get somewhere with parking. We rented an apartment for a week, and I had to be at the pay and display car park before 8 am every morning to pay for parking.

Thanks so much for the comments. Definitely leaning towards the Pembroke at the moment because of your feedback. Seems it might be the better option for families with kids.

I’m quite jealous OP. I love that area but we’re not going this year. It is so lovely. You’ll have a great time! There is SO much to do along the coast East of Tenby.

Thank you for the map. It's a little blurry but I'll have some fun investigating where the arrows are pointing to!

We loved Solva and the cliffside walk to St David's but it is very small and not much to do there on a rainy day with kids.

LemonRoses · 27/02/2021 17:59

I think Solva is pretty but would always go to St David’s. Wildlife boat trips, beautiful beaches like Whitesands, nice pubs like The Sloop at Porthgain. Went ever New Year for years and the children were never bored.

I’m sorry it’s blurry!
It is clear on my camera roll but the resolution has been lost!

Crabbing at Cresswell Quay is fun too.

I love this area and am also jealous as not going this year. The thing to remember is all these areas, Tenby to St David's are really easy to drive between so it doesn't really matter where you stay. When. The kids were little we always stayed in Solva (everyone gathers at the harbour/boathouse each evening for crabbing, great cafe, lots of kayakers leave from here, nice pub) - but not a huge amount else to do (but quick drive to St David's or anywhere else really so fine as a base). Now the children are older we stay actually in St David's so they can walk out and go and get ice cream or fish and chips on their own. I love St David's and would always try and stay there. Cathedral and cafe are awesome, nice pubs and restaurants/cafes. All the boat/islands/wildlife boat trips book from here.

beautiful beaches everywher wherever you base yourself. Whitesands Bay near Dr Davids particularly good for your age kids, lots of water sports from there and nice cafe/ice creams.

minchinfin · 27/02/2021 20:34

Don't miss Marloes Sands on the map - my favourite beach in the world, and I'm much enough to have been to both the Indian Ocean and Caribbean.
