Recommendations needed -- most ideal place in Cumbria / Lake District area

Hi,

Husband and I have made up our mines to move from Asia and back to the UK (for him). We are a family of five, husband is British and is tired of corporate life here as an expatriate. Kids age 9, 6 and 4 (this year). We wish to live a simpler life, with beautiful countryside, slower pace of life, etc.

Always my dream to live in the Lake District, never been to this part of the UK, but been reading forum posts on this area -- Lancaster, Kirkby Lonsdale, Bolton le Sands, Carnforth, etc.

Our requirements: Good state primary schools for the children, just not too uncomfortably small. Prefer a detached house, budget about 200k-250k, but could be stretched a lot to up to 700k if pooled together with mother in law (bigger budget is great but would need e.g. an annex /separate living accommodation for her). Obviously we would prefer a small house of our own, but I am aware 250k can't get us any charming cottages.

Area has to be safe, also preferably welcoming! :)

No need to be near any cities for work/commute, will be mostly working from home.

I read that Kirky Lonsdale is fantastic -- I am looking into it. Any other recommendations?

Seems like there are many good schools too in Lancaster, but not sure if it's best location if we want some countryside.

Extremely apprehensive making this huge decision! So please help me make an informed one!

But also very excited at the prospect of living in this area - I love running, and fell running sounds about the best thing in the world but I will probably need introductory course on even basic things like what to wear we are now living in the humid tropics -- 27C all year round :|

Kirkby Lonsdale very nice! Otherwise sedburgh areas or ulverston and near there are very nice. Do you want to be in a town/ village or remoter?

Btw ulverston is really lovely because it’s a “festival town” so they literally celebrate everything... they’ve even got a flag festival, the dickens festival is particularly cute and twee. The cinema is an ace old 1930s one with an intermission in each film for ice cream and they’ve got a hipster film club. The pubs are ace. Great food in ulverston too. The shops are really good - there’s a lane of really good ones where they have a chocolate shop, a sweet shop, the worlds best card and stationery shop, great women’s clothes shops and two or three gift shops... lovely cafe with a fire, plus there’s now an M&S and Aldi just outside town, and they have new build houses that aren’t as expensive. The local comp school is really good - my mates went there and all did really well. It’s train station takes you direct to Lancaster and Preston if you need to work there (most beautiful journey along the estuary) and on to Manchester airport if you like travel. It’s got a great park and basically everything you’d want for a family... my bet would be on ulverston

Oh and there a big Buddhist commune on the outskirts of ulverston and that adds a really nice vibe, and it’s where quaker stuff started so if you’re into that side of things. It’s a bit of a mix of young families, some hipsters, farmers in pubs, Buddhists doing their processions, old folk... it’s actually a really charming town when I think of it and now wondering why I don’t live there!!

Ulverston is very inclusive too. All events are a mix of age groups and people. Quite a few people who have moved here from away and there’s no distinction made (apart from in jest). Everyone knows each other and helps out. Lots of volunteering goes on. The first vaccine clinic had to stop accepting volunteers after it hit 600 in about 2 days.

Schools are all good. Secondary gets good results and is well known for the music department (their wind band is sponsored by the Royal Marines and they do joint concerts every two years). They regularly get people into Oxbridge etc.

We need an ulverston appreciation thread because it’s the nicest town - I mean it looks nice enough, but it’s really charming because it is like a really big village with shops. I know three who’ve moved back from Manchester, Edinburgh and London to live in and around it too. Sadly been no festivals for a while but the Christmas tree looked really good :)

AnotherFineFest is my favourite, basically a giant party for the whole town!

Love the shop floor project, wish they still had it open not just as an appointments only thing Blush

Wetoopere · 02/03/2021 12:18

Never been in there 😳

@Wetoopere @izbelle @Ballstothis148
Thank you all so much for your glowing recommendations. You’d have to pipe down now, cos it’s making me absolutely envious and I’m not sure 100% if this move of ours is going ahead 😔
