Hello Lovely Mumsnetters,

We're bailing on the idea of an overseas holiday this summer for obvious reasons. We're considering Cornwall as I've always wanted to see more of it.

We have a DS (7) and a small dog. We want beaches, nice dog walks, good playparks/adventure parks/ waterpark and nice places to have lunch. We will have a car so can drive around a little bit but don't want to be driving miles every day.

Where's a good spot to base ourselves?

Avoid Padstow, St Ives etc.

We tend to stay near St Mawes when we go, Carrick Roads, Roseland Peninsula etc.

Cornwall was booked up to the hilt last Summer and it was busy, but not unbearable.
Availability is tricky, Lots of people will have rebooked their cancelled holidays from last year and lots of owners will not have released their availability because of the uncertainty and the hassle of cancellations/ refunds if the rules don’t allow it.

I’m sure the good people of Cornwall are going to be ecstatic this summer

UntamedWisteria · 11/02/2021 09:09

Is it normally the same or is this the fallout from COVID?

It's COVID OP. Widely reported in the press.

Although places in the north are apparently less booked up.

SoddingWeddings · 11/02/2021 09:21

@ChancesWhatChances the usual pitchforks and fire barricades are out already on anticipation of a hellish summer for us all down here. We are a very small county with just one hospital capable of taking Covid patients, so the general consensus seems to be wishing everyone would just not come this year....

List of beaches that permit dogs and dates for the permissions:

We love and regularly stop in Gwithian. Absolutely gorgeous beach. If you reaaaally want to go to Newquay it's only a 30-40mim drive. You can get to St Ives on the train or even walk it. Hayle is the main town for amenities. Penzance 20 mins away. Sennen cove really accessible and you can walk to landsend from there. Then going south there's Marazion, Praa Sands, the Lizard which you can then walk to Kynancw Cove from

I did just joke that I hope people are allowed to go abroad to ease pressure!

Also, Devon is equally lovely and usually cuts at least an hour off journey times.

Honestly though, tourists is tourists is tourists, it’s fine, it’s doesn’t last forever and it’s not like it’s a new phenomenon.

What is pissing me off is why the fuck the govt. thinks drawing international attention to Cornwall is wise. Come ON, there are other nice bits if the country, we’ve had our share of the limelight!

Rick Steins programme, there’s that shit one on ITV, the programme about the fishermen.. can’t the cameras be directed elsewhere for a few years please?

IndecentFeminist · 11/02/2021 11:22

We live in the Isle of Wight, we are already anticipating a bonkers summer 😏😬

I don’t know why the lovely people of Cornwall are worried about their hospitals being overwhelmed.

They were not overwhelmed last year.

This year, most people who might need hospital will be vaccinated. Logic tells me, Treliske will be fine.

That is what Matt Hancock appeared to be saying last week too.

I think the main concern is the variants isn’t it? This summers virus might not act in the same way as last summers.

There is also just bog standard resentment, I know I’m guilty of it sometimes. I resent that my kids education is being put on hold so that it’s safe for people to have their Easter holidays here.

Franchis Holiday Park on The Lizard. They might have bungalows or lodges left.

livingthegoodlife · 12/02/2021 11:43

Don't panic about availability. I've got a place 2 miles out of Padstow and I haven't even opened my availability for this summer yet.

I don't think it will be any busier than last year, which was busy but not unbearable.

Lulu1919 · 16/02/2021 21:14

Carbis Bay .....lovely
Falmouth and area

addicted2spaniels · 16/02/2021 21:27

For the future OP, we stayed at Una St Ives. It's a gorgeous site, with a fab restaurant on site that's dog friendy and amazing pool complex. They also do take away pizzas that are divine.

It was a good walk down to Carbis Bay, and you could then get the train to St Ives. And you're within a half hour drive of Lands End, St Michaels Mount, The Minnack Theatre.

We can't wait to go back.

barnanabas · 17/02/2021 19:57

Falmouth beaches allow dogs early morning and late evening (not between 10am and 6pm). Not sure where you're going to be, but the beaches just outside Falmouth (helford beaches or flushing) allow dogs year round.
Falmouth is full of great places to eat and drink (in normal life,. obviously). Boat trips (to flushing and St Mawes, or wildlife watching) are a nice thing to.do.
You could happily spend a week in the Falmouth area, but other bits of Cornwall (e.g. North coast) feel very different and are perfectly accessible with a car.
