Family holiday in UK with teens and dog advice

Spring2021 · 31/01/2021 13:47

Just think we better get organised. Looking for advice for the above.

Looking for recommendations of areas, holiday let recommendations and top tips for summer 2021 holiday. Nice pub or restaurant within walking distance that serves good food for an evening would be nice.

Thinking coastal maybe Scotland, Wales, Yorkshire, Northumberland but welcome to other suggestions. Think Cornwall maybe crazy in terms of cost, traffic and too densely populated with holidaymakers to feel comfortable.

Thanks

I’d recommend Celtic Haven in Pembrokeshire. There are a few dog friendly cottages and the on-site facilities include a games room, pool and tennis court. It’s near the coast where there are a couple of surf schools. The south beach at Tenby allows dogs all year round.

Spring2021 · 31/01/2021 15:09

@Fivemoreminutes1 thanks for that sounds ideal we will check them out. Usually holiday abroad but obviously I think its too risky and possibly unlikely to happen this year. Eldest DS is 17 so this could be his last family holiday with us. Thanks

Northumberland is really fantastic. My favourite places are Embleton, Alnmouth, and Craster. Alnwick is a good for a visit, especially Barter Books. Bamburgh beach and castle are both lovely. We did a good coastal walk from Craster along to Dunstanburgh castle.

Can't speak much for the restaurants as we didn't go in season so lots of places closed. Plus we have young dc so tend to eat after they are in bed. Fish and chip lunches are good all over the coastline.

Seahouses gets rammed in the summer, it has a mini golf and various pubs etc but we tend to give it a swerve just because of the crowds.

Spring2021 · 31/01/2021 16:27

Thanks we have stayed in Northumberland when ours were younger and we love the beaches and scenic castles (Bamburgh/Dunstanburgh) but can’t seem to find any accommodation that fits the bill (king or super king for us, either full sized single beds for tall teen DC in another room (or three bedded accommodation) that looks spacious, airy, clean, with hard or moppable flooring in the living areas (don’t want anywhere carpeted that smells of dog), enclosed garden maybe with a nice view and walkable to a nice pub or restaurant with outdoor seating on the off chance that the world is a safer place by the summer.
Cornwall maybe would be more exciting and have more going on for the teens but its a very long drive for us in the north and it sounds like it will be expensive and busy (to get there and whilst there).

I can't help with rentals as we have a motorhome, however many campsites also have rentals as well, might be worth a look.
North Wales is beautiful and also lots to do. Have a look from Llandudno to about Caernarfon.
Inland as well around Betws y coed

There are zip wire places, underground trampolines and tree climbing places a bit like Go Ape. There's an artificial surf place near Conwy and of course Snowdon is waiting to be conquered either on foot or by train.
If you like castles - just a few!
Tenby is lovely but almost as far to drive from northern England as Cornwall

Last year we stayed in an Airbnb in Tenby within the old city walls. Was right in the town, couple of minutes to the beaches, fort, castle. Lots of restaurants and bars plus takeaways if not allowed to eat in!

We then went to another Airbnb in the mumbles and visited the beaches on the gower. Great for body boarding, surfing if your teens are interested. Again plenty of places to eat, drink and shop in town. All the beaches we visited were massive, perfect for social distancing. We saw lots of dogs whilst we were there, the beaches and towns appeared very dog friendly.

I would look at North Wales, plenty to see and do without having to travel too far as its quite compact, less traffic than Cornwall.
Some good ideas here

Tenby sounds fabulous but one heck of a drive for us.

Other Half booked It I just agreed then found how far away it was but make the journey into an adventure

Spring2021 · 06/02/2021 18:11

Just looked and its well over 6 hours journey for us, too much driving in a day with the dog. But does sound lovely.

Thinking coastal.....Scotland, Northumberland, Yorkshire or somewhere closer in Wales.

Wales has plenty of choice and its quite compact.

Doidontimmm · 08/02/2021 18:37

What about Whitby or Scarborough? Lovely beaches, pubs, old fashioned seaside, you could go to Flamingoland for the coasters?

goodname · 18/02/2021 21:49

St.Andrews in Scotland? Lovely town with two beaches. Lots of pubs and restaurants and good coffee shops. Kite buggy’s or surfing for teens and on the coastal path for lots of dog walks. Chain walk in elie is really fun. Lots of nice seaside villages to visit in the east Neuk

FrankieTross · 20/02/2021 23:57

We went to Salcombe, Devon last summer with teens and we all loved it there.

Funf · 24/02/2021 08:29

Had a think what about Conwy? Smaller version of Tenby its a Medieval walled town, loads to see and do locally via bus or short drive
www.donthibernate.co.uk/conwy/
Its a fantastic base for seeing the area as loads to see and do within 30 mins drive

Llandudno is very nice about 15 mins drive but its a regular bus route

The Conwy Valley is spectacular Bodnant Gardens, and a Go ape thing,
Go to Betws y coed to see Fairy Glen Its 30 mins from Conwy
