Your favourite UK road trip route

Hi,

2021 is hopefully going to be the year of the uk road trips for us and I'm looking for inspiration!

We are based in NW England, family of 4 - 2 dc aged 9 and 7. Up for anything really.

We have access to a motor home we can use but happy with hotels from luxury to travelodge.

I like my food and trying out local delicacies, the kids like a mixture of theme parks or similar and outdoors.

Open to your ideas. We have 3 weeks in summer and then several weeks dotted throughout the year to (hopefully) plan for.

Thank you

We are also NW based.
We did a little Bloggy type thing as people kept asking so it was easier.

North Wales has loads of hidden gems.
Oh and you need to go to Manly Mere or Crocky trail to see how muddy you can get the kids.

A costal tour of Scotland?

peapotter · 07/01/2021 09:48

North coast 500, but it’s getting too popular now and hard to drive in school holidays. Do some research first. The landscapes are something else though

Onedropbeat · 07/01/2021 09:51

Everyone will be doing the same his year so the hot spots and roads will be far busier than any normal year so might not be as fun and relaxing as people hope

midnightstar66 · 07/01/2021 09:52

There lots more than the NC500 or you can just incorporate bits of it. Coming from the north west there's loads in between home and the start of NC to be seen too. Google is your friend.

senua · 07/01/2021 09:53

I've heard that the North Coast 500 was dreamt up by some marketing bod but nobody thought to put the infrastructure in place - lots of potholes and not enough accommodation.

I've enjoyed lots of road trips

The ones that include a ferry always extra special to;

Arran
Mull
Hebrides
Isle of Man
Isle of Wight
Jersey
Scilly Isles
Ireland

Or a causeway

St Michaels Mount
Northumberland
Shell beach Wales
Giants Causeway

So many good memories

Prepping for your trip.
North Coast 500, Scotland.
A Yorkshire circuit, England.
The Atlantic Highway, England.
Coastal Circuit, Northern Ireland.
Ben Nevis to the Isle of Skye, Scotland.

@senua Yep that's about right. It's a stunning part of the world but the lack of infrastructure for the upsurge in visitors (especially those not driving cars eg camper vans) is a shocker. Think toilets etc. And those lovely single track roads can be a nightmare with queues of traffic both ways. My favourite part of Scotland but I won't go in the summer any more :(

Up the side of Loch Lomond , on to Glencoe and over the Skye bridge. The North part of Skye is lovely to travel round and there’s lots to see. You can then go in the ferry from Uig in Skye to Harris which has the most beautiful beaches. And from Harris get the ferry to the Uists which are fairly deserted.

@Funf the links to your road trips above don’t seem to be working?

Funf · 01/02/2021 06:33

Hover over the menu, dont click it, when it drops down click the one you want to view, I know its a bit crap but not sure how best to fix it

Bearsbearsbears40 · 01/02/2021 06:44

Definitely up to the Highlands via the Loch Lomond and Glencoe route as a pp has mentioned. Stop off in Fort William for some mountain biking or walking at the Nevis Range. I would then go across to Aberdeen to spot dolphins, back south via the Cairngorms.
