To just be baffled

Am I bu to be baffled at Londons house prices and the north/south divide? Out of curiosity I've been on right move looking at Londons house prices and I cant believe them? We bought our house (2 bedroom small terrace in a nice village) for £78,000 4 years ago. We would get nothing for that in London. Why do people stay there?

Because our families are here and primarily our jobs which allow us to afford London house prices (albeit a few years later than we could up North)

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/12/2020 21:54

I expect they have jobs or family there.

Maybe they just really like living in London.

ssd · 29/12/2020 21:54

Cos London is brilliant.

Have you never been?

LaceyBetty · 29/12/2020 21:55

I wouldn't be able to do my job outside of London.

ZadieZadie · 29/12/2020 21:57

It's where many of the most interesting jobs are.

It's also where some of the world's best theatres, galleries, restaurants and so on are. God I miss them.

It's where my friends and family are.

I always find these 'why do people live in London' threads odd. Nearly 10 million people do choose to pay the costs of living here, and most people could move out if they wanted. But it's a great place to be, so we stay.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 29/12/2020 21:58

Were you looking at the house on the other thread for 1.5million in kent? I'd want a mansion for that, it was horrible.
But then I'm from 'up kitty's and can't really see why anyone would want to live down there, yes I know family, work but urgh!

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 29/12/2020 21:59

Up kittys?? Wtf auto correct, up north!!

helloxhristmas · 29/12/2020 22:06

My job is in London. My family is in London. I earn enough in London to afford the house. Dh earns significantly more in London than he would anywhere else.

Bit of a silly question really.

LandMoor · 29/12/2020 22:20

Okay as an idiot I didnt think of families and jobs (sorry) i have been to London a long time ago which was lovely as a one off but I wouldn't rush back. I feel daft now 🤦‍♀️

Because I was born here, grew up here and my family & friends are here. Everything I need is on my doorstep, transport connections are excellent, great options for shopping, lots of things for DCs to do and some excellent universities. The ethnic diversity means that I have access to some high quality authentic exotic foodstuffs that I may find difficult to source elsewhere. The history is fascinating with some iconic buildings, museums and green spaces. I love London (despite the crime and pollution) and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I see what you mean re. house prices but those of us that grow up here are accustomed to London property prices and having a large chunk of our salaries going on the mortgage and rent. Where I live a lot of the property are Victorian terrace houses with lovely original period features. It's nice to experience the countryside but I prefer to live somewhere that's a bit more 'happening' and lively. If I had to live up North, Manchester would be my choice as it's the closest I've felt to 'home'.

LandMoor · 29/12/2020 22:25

@ConfusedComMum I l£ve in Manchester (but a small village ther÷)e and love it!) Would you say you saw the effect of pollution in London significantly?

OP posts:
LandMoor · 29/12/2020 22:29

@helloxchristmas I wouldn't say it was a silly question as I'm asking people to explain? I dont get it and you can show your (probably good views.) I'm quite naive and I've only ever lived in the north. I went to a wedding last year and the people I spoke to were baffled they could buy a car pack space for the same price as my house. Any different?

I grew up in the North West, moved to London in my 20s and stayed there 20 years. Been in Devon for 6 years now and would never want to go back to London nor could we afford to..

I don't miss London at all. Im definitely a countryside person rather than a city one.

Its also lovely being able to see the sky and the stars so clearly here as very little light pollution.

LandMoor · 29/12/2020 22:31

Sorry @ConfusedcomMum I seem to have garbled my reply.

@DartmoorChef thanks for your reply I've been invited by family numerous time to visit Devon I'm dying to go but due to a high need DD I havent been yet but I cant want to visit! I do love the north west though.

Yes LandMoor unfortunately me and my sibling developed asthma as children. However the area that I grew up in will be a car free zone in the near future. I have since moved to a greener and quieter part of London and haven't had any flare ups since. The current mayor seems to be trying to tackle the pollution problem though.

I loved Manchester when we went to visit there once on some random road trip (DH is a Man U FC season ticket holder).
