Hi, I've already put this in "Days out recommendations", but thought I'd put it here too..hope that's ok!

I've booked my daughter aged 8 and myself into Manchester Travel lodge on the nights of the 28th and 29th October, (Sunday and Monday night). Did it ages ago, she's on half term then. I've heard mixed reviews about the travel lodge, but thought I'd go one night and see what it's like, stay for 2 if it's ok.

Just wondering what is there to do in Manchester, that's of interest to children? She's not keen on shopping but likes museums and all kinds of entertainment.

If anyone can give suggestions I'd appreciate it!

Thanks

SK

There's loads to do.
Manchester museum, Oxford Road. Natural history but also has interactive stuff for children. It's half-term this week so there'll work shops on.

The science Museum is fantastic and you could spend the whole day there, there is so much to see.

Urbis Museum is also very child friendly as is the City Art Gallery.

The People's History Museum is off the beaten track but well worth a visit. Children love it.

There are lots of cinemas in town and many cafes and restaurants children like to go to.

The Royal Exchange Theatre may have some children's workshops on. Look at the web-site.

The Aquatic swimming pool on Oxford is a great place to swim if she enjoys that.

It's a great place to visit. Have Fun!!

Waterstones has a lovely children's room.

The Triangle (nearby if you go to Urbis or the cathedral) has a caffe Nero suspended in a pod-type thing.

I have posted on Days Out recommendations and there are a few links to some events for children - take a look and add if you want to!
My dd is 6.7 and i will be spending soooo much time there this half term - hth!

DottydotsofBloodOnTheFloor · 21/10/2007 19:02

Yes, another vote for Urbis - and the wheel's there as well (terrifies me...). The triangle is good to play around - inside and outside.

SpiritualKnot · 21/10/2007 19:19

Wow it all looks good, thanks for the help.

I think the Urbis sounds really good and it looks like it's near to the travelodge, we could go there on Sunday. Think we'll go to the cathedral too.

Still a bit nervous about the travelodge?

Does she like Dr Who? If so there is agood exhibit on at the science Museum (peek out of window on top floor and see Coronation street). Mine loved it. Wheel is fab, urbis is OK ish, catherdral fab,

SpiritualKnot · 22/10/2007 17:54

She loves Dr Who. Is the Science museum quite a walk from the Travelodge? Would it be a bus ride?

Where's the Travelodge?

SpiritualKnot · 22/10/2007 19:13

Travelodge Manchester Central Hotel
Blackfriars Street
Manchester M3 5AL

It says it's 5 mins walk from Victoria station and is near Ubis.

It'll be about a 20 min walk down Deansgate to the Science Museum. That is very central, close to most places.

WotzaZombie · 22/10/2007 20:19

The cathedral was lovely and they love children taking an interest.

The Manchester Wheel here

The Urbis is wonderful for children here

jellybeans · 23/10/2007 10:32

www.msim.org.uk/ visiting-us/where-are-we (take out gap) here are directions to museum and map.

SpiritualKnot · 23/10/2007 10:50

That's great. I think we'll probably have a walk to it. Thank you!

We went yesterday - dd1 (7 and a half) and I. We went to Urbis, Pizza Hut which is just round the corner for a grown-up three course meal, looked round the town hall and the library (we were lost ) but still nice. Urbis were doing children's activities yesterday and there's loads on at the Science Museum at the moment because it's the Science Festival or something, but we only went for a day so didn't go there this time. Also went on the trams - fun and cheap.

brandnewpumpkin · 24/10/2007 21:06

Sorry - not Pizza Hut, Pizza Express - doing 3 course children's meals.

Thanks for all the advice. Husband wasn't keen on us staying in a travelodge as he's had bad experiences! We're now going to stay at the new Macdonalds hotel next to Piccadilly Railway station. That's the station we actually arrive at and leave from, pretty handy.
Looks like a nice hotel. Is it finished though I wonder? Does anyone know?

Hi again, Thanks for the advice. We've just got back from our time in Manchester and it was excellent. We went to Urbis, the Triangle, the Science museum with the Dr Who exhibition and had a swim at the Hilton hotel. We also went on the Manchester Wheel.

Ended up staying 3 nights; one night at the Travelodge and two nights at the new Macdonald Hotel in Piccadilly. The Travelodge was great and the Macdonald was luxurious!

All in all it was brilliant!

Thanks again for all your help!!
