Activity holidays UK??

Kids are gettImg older, now 12 and 14.

Both quite sporty and active. We were thinking about foregoing a traditional beach holiday abroad (which may not be possible anyway next year) and going somewhere where there are lots of outward bound activities.

Mountain biking, kayaking etc.

Any ideas?

Organised for you, or DIY?

Funf · 15/11/2020 08:17

Depends on your location
We like North Wales as it has so much variety in a smallish area, sea, great beaches, Fish, Chips and Bingo if you want it, but quite tranquil places too.
You can do a Mountain and beach in the same day, lots of info here
www.donthibernate.co.uk
Now if you fancy something totally Different
www.go-below.co.uk
The Cafe they meet at is excellent too.
Mountain Biking Llandegla is an excellent well known place
www.ridenorthwales.co.uk/agents/coed-llandegla/
Nearby is a Fishery where the kids can have a fishing lesson Cafe is good too
www.llandeglafishery.com
Once the bike ride is over Llangollen is about 20 mins away
www.donthibernate.co.uk/route-6-another-winter-trip-to-llangollen-via-worlds-end/
Its very good for canoeing as it has the River for the more experienced or the Canal
www.proadventure.co.uk/wordpress/a-guide-to-canoeing-the-llangollen-canal/

If you fancy a day out in the City Liverpool is about 60 -90 mins away depending on your location and has loads to offer
www.donthibernate.co.uk/liverpool/
The Hidden gem in Liverpool is the Watersport's place does a Speed Boat ride through the docks as some docks have no speed limit its Cold so wrap up, but fantastic, £50 for a family of 4

PGL? They have basses all over and do family holidays as well as school trips.

Funf · 15/11/2020 11:17

Wales is fantastic, the advantage of the north its its compact, drive for 30 mins and its different. Plenty of activities, great food, scenery etc it has it all, accommodation can be very cheap too.
If the kids like History what about one of the best Medieval walled towns?
www.donthibernate.co.uk/conwy/
20 mins drive away you can Toboggan or Ski
www.jnlllandudno.co.uk/slopes/tubing-tobogganing/
Its Just outside Llandudno, where you can spend the day, Angel bay to see the seals is fab

Many people just go to Snowdonia but lots to see and do outside of the national park. The National Park can be a bit wet though, but Drive out to the coast or the Llyn Peninsular and it can me much better.
The Llyn Peninsular is excellent but not quite as good if the weather is bad
www.visitsnowdonia.info/llyn-peninsula
Barmouth as a base allows you to travel up and down the coast
www.barmouth-wales.co.uk
Its worth a visit " Up North" as there is quite a bit to see and do Liverpool is a fantastic weekend
Blackpool well not my cup of Tea but lots of people love it. What about a road trip on the way? Have a Day in Liverpool, the week in Wales and stop in Shropshire on the way home?www.donthibernate.co.uk/shropshire-autumn-weekend/

Funf · 15/11/2020 11:21

Fivemoreminutes1 · 15/11/2020 15:16

Agree that Wales is the place to go!
Bluestone www.bluestonewales.com/breaks-holidays/activity for a more DIY activity holiday
Or Preseli for something more off the peg
www.preseliventure.co.uk/family/adventure-holidays/

Toomuchleopard · 15/11/2020 15:24

I would suggest Keswick in the Lake District. You can do mountain biking in Whinlatter forest, kayaking or paddle boarding on Derwentwater. www.activity-centre.com/keswick-climbing-wall/
Lots of other activities here. Fantastic walking in the mountains.

ScrapThatThen · 15/11/2020 15:49

Austrian alps? Lots of companies do fab multi activity holidays there. We've been on an adults one with white water rafting, mountain biking, paragliding, skiing (the glacier) and shared meals.

ScrapThatThen · 15/11/2020 15:50

Oh sorry! UK. Wales probably

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/11/2020 15:53

Cornwall if you like water sports. There’s not much in the way of mountain biking there though!

TheTeenageYears · 15/11/2020 15:56

Loads of ski resorts in France/Austria/Italy offer those types of holidays in the summer - they always used to be a lot more reasonably priced compared to the ski season too.

emmathedilemma · 16/11/2020 11:20

Aviemore would probably suit you.
If going abroad becomes an option then Nielson beachclub holidays are brilliant.

TheTeenageYears · 16/11/2020 15:43

Sorry, missed the UK bit

SilkieRabbits · 16/11/2020 16:01

We found there was quite a lot of activities in Devon this summer - went on boat trip to Lundy and went swimming with seals then walking round the island which included lots of rocks you could climb and wildlife like highland cattle, ponies etc. Also went llama trekking across Dartmoor and gorging with Adventure Oakehampton. Place we stayed had a pool so could swim everyday and next to beach / sea.

There was lots of kayaking available, SUP etc, this year white water rafting was cancelled due to covid but normally on. They also had some jumping off cliffs thing not sure what is was called, looked a bit like how to end up in hospital to me Grin Some horse riding was open but not beginners I think. We stayed by Ilfracombe and by Dartmoor.

SilkieRabbits · 16/11/2020 16:05

Adventure Oakehampton do mountain biking as well.

scrappydappydoo · 16/11/2020 16:11

I have two of similar age. We’ve done bluestone- it was good and there were things for teenagers to do but I think it’s better for younger families. We did find lots to do outside of bluestone as well.
I second North Wales for just about everything active and Devon is great too - we learnt to surf on the north coast which my two loved.

BaconAndAvocado · 17/11/2020 08:43
