Portsmouth - things to do tomorrow?

Any ideas please?

Ideally something outside to wander around, but not just shops.

TIA

How about the Historic Dockyard.

Tryingtogetitright · 27/10/2020 14:55

Gunwharf Quays - shops but there's old Portsmouth to walk round and the seafront a short walk away

Fort Nelson - free entry just pay parking (not sure if you need to book?)

Short drive to:

Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary - free entry but you'd need to book today

Portchester Castle - nice little coffee and cake van inside the walls and you can walk round the outside and see the sea

Second the Dockyard and/or Gunwharf Quays

Or D-Day Museum and a walk along the seafront

BertieBloopsMum · 27/10/2020 16:16

If you do want to do the Historic Dockyard, you need to prebook online.

happytodayhappytomorrow · 27/10/2020 20:23

thanks muchly. Off to check out all of the ideas. Smile

Once you've done Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker, you can pop over and walk my dog for me if you like. I'm feeling under the weather.

fairydustandpixies · 27/10/2020 20:29

Spinnaker Tower, historic dockyard, get the ferry over to Gosport to the Museum of Naval Firepower, Gunwharf Quays for the designer outlets, Commercial Road for the likes of Primark. Loads to do!!

fairydustandpixies · 27/10/2020 20:30

Southsea esplanade too for the amusements and fairground or hop on the hovercraft to the Isle of Wight.

fairydustandpixies · 27/10/2020 20:31

And the aquarium at Southsea!

Fort nelson needs to be booked for arrival time but you can stay as long as you wish once there.

Historic dockyard is interesting but will probably need booking.

I don't rate spinnaker tower, not much for your money.

If you like animals there is Staunton country park too

wiltingflower · 27/10/2020 20:46

Love Portsmouth. You've got lots of ideas for indoor activities so far. I'd walk along the seafront (see the sunrise depending on weather, listen to the waves crashing) including the piers and gardens, have a meal at the Tenth hole, go to the amusement park area, have hot donuts by the sea from one of the food vans, watch the hovercraft go by and get sprayed by them, go to Gunwharf Quays, visit the pub there, do the millennium promenade walk and see the dockyards. If you're into exercise the seafront is also a good place for running and there's steps for aerobics and generally working out early in the morning.

wiltingflower · 27/10/2020 20:47

Also going to add Canoe lake to this, close to Tenth hole.

wiltingflower · 27/10/2020 20:50

If you ever go in summer, there's normally mini pedal boats on Canoe lake, you can go fishing with little children there, plus there's a park (with rose gardens, mini Southsea village, play areas, cricket and tennis areas but these need booking) and not sure if open but there's also a mini natural history museum in that area.

we are just back from Portsmouth
ferry/hovercraft over to the Isle of Wight for a day, lots to do there, castles, Osbourne House etc
Historic Dockyards though we had to queue for 50 minutes to get into the Mary Rose

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2021 12:50

@Ted27 would you recommend Portsmouth for a short trip? How long does ferry to IOW take?

Ted27 · 18/08/2021 13:02

@bendmeoverbackwards

yes I would

we have had two long weekends there now, plus another day trip en route to Isle of Wight

If you stay in the Premier Inn Historic Dockyard - the Dockyard is 2 minutes walk. We have been three times and still not seen it all.
When we went at the beginning of July it was deserted, no queues for anything, big contrast to October half term.

Gunwharf Quays is a few minutes walk away for shops and restaurants - Zizzis, Wagammas, Cosy Club etc. We have been up the Spinnaker Tower, my son did the jump off the tower, great views and good to orientate yourself.

Quite a bit to do at South Sea.

The ferry to the Isle of wight takes 20 minutes from Portsmouth Harbour arriving at Ryde Pier, its 5 minutes walk from the premier inn. Easy day trip, public transport on IofW very good so easy to get around

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2021 13:06

Fab thank you so much @Ted27 after a disastrous holiday in Norfolk this summer, I want to get it right next time.

Ted27 · 18/08/2021 13:15

no its this one

we had a week on the Isle of Wight in July and had a great time. Loads to do, easy to get around.

We being me and my 17 year old. We are going back next year

travailtotravel · 18/08/2021 13:15

10th hole for epic cake! Otherwise, Dockyard is interesting esp Mary Rose.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2021 13:36

Bother the Premier Inn is booked up. Looking at a Holiday Inn instead.

Ted27 · 18/08/2021 13:49

there are several Premier Inns in Portsmouth, all would be ok and not too far from things.
The one you found is a good location for Southsea and the hovercraft to the Isle of Wight

travailtotravel · 18/08/2021 14:03

Are you relying on public transport or do you have a car?

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2021 15:10

We have a car @travailtotravel I've booked the Holiday Inn Express which apparently is also very close to the dockyard.
