Looking for inspiration. Weekend break end Oct/early Nov. Staying in hotel, B&B or self catering.

Must have:

Pubs/restaurants within walking distance
Country or coastal walks near accommodation
Village, small town location or perhaps somewhere like a mini centreparcs site

Prefer to avoid Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, east coast and no further north than Manchester as either too far on this occasion, have been to in the last couple of years.

Where are you travelling from? Do you have a car or need somewhere near a station?

Following for own interest!

Ramblers’ Rest B&B in Castleton in the Peak District is nice and unfussy if you’re not after something high end. It’s well placed for lots of good day trips and walks, and Castleton itself is extremely pretty and has a lot to offer.

Forest Lodge in the New Forest is in the small town of Lyndhurst. Nice rooms and an indoor pool. www.newforesthotels.co.uk/forest-lodge-hotel/ It’s close to the Beaulieu Motor Museum and Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. Also it’s not too far at all from a good bike hire place (Forest Leisure at Burley) and several good cycling paths and Eling Tide Mill Experience.

The Montagu Arms in Beaulieu is within walking distance of Palace House and possibly the motor museum. The hotel has an amazing restaurant, but there’s also a pub, a couple of tea rooms and some nice shops for browsing in the village too. Beaulieu is one of the prettiest villages I’ve ever been to.

Thanks for your replies. We're travelling by car so there's no restrictions with transport.

I'm going to look into all suggestions this week and we'll be hopefully booking something next weekend, so any more replies appreciated. We're totally open minded, don't mind cheap and cheerful but if the right place comes up pushing the boat out.

Might be worth looking at Hoseasons as they have log cabins in country locations, with walks and other facilities nearby.

Suffolk Coast, based Southwold or Aldeburgh? North York Moors (might be slightly north of Manchester but not much) - Helmsley, Pickering or Malton - plenty of beautiful walking and within 30-40 minutes of Coast, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay etc. Malton has a reputation as a foodie town, and there are good pubs and restaurants in Helmsley and Pickering.

Oops, missed the not the east coast bit! Parts of Cheshire are beautiful - quintessential English countryside.
