Bridlington in August?

Our holiday abroad has been postponed until next year and now plans to stay with family in Cornwall in August look like they've fallen through due to family illness so that's not happening either (I'm not paying summer holiday prices in Cornwall to spend 50% of the time visiting relatives and probably getting rained on...)

DP has a hankering for Brid, being from E Yorkshire and really liking fading seaside resorts. We have visited a couple of times for a walk on the beach but only in the winter so I've got no idea what it's like in the summer (and I don't think we've ever been into the town centre proper)- is there enough to fill a week with 2 DCs (3 & 6)? We have been to Sewerby Hall before and they liked that, and also the leisure centre was a hit. I'd prefer not to drive so we'd be looking at a week in and around town with maybe a trip into Hull one day to see family/The Deep.

Is it possible to get up to the cliffs and see the birds without a car? Or is it too far out?

And any recommendations for nice self-catering accommodation welcome!

The town centre is not a thing of beauty. M&S has gone along with McDonalds and a number of smaller shops. Lots of charity shops. In all honesty a week would be too long if you don't want to use the car. The beach is fabulous and the promenade much tidier. We went last week for a walk and chips and it was lovely looking out to sea.
It's six miles to walk to Flamborough for the RSPB site but there are buses.

IMO you recognise you will need to drive to explore a bit more or you consider Scarborough.

I live in East Yorks & wouldn't holiday round here without a car unfortunately. Brid's a bit grim to be honest, but if you drive & use it as a base there's lots to do. Although if you are looking for a base like that I'd go a bit further north (Filey?). A car free holiday might be possible from Scarborough though?

If you can get up there by car Flamborough Head is weirdly under-rated. Flamborough North Landing & a few other little coves there have great caves accessible at low tide & seabirds nesting all over the cliffs (we've seen puffins at North Landing). South Landing has a good stretch of sandy beach which is pretty empty even in high summer.

Try Hornsea instead, bit smaller and less grotty

Thanks all- I think we'll go to Scarborough instead, DC will love it. We don't have a car- do hire one for trips sometimes- but DC1 is terribly travel sick- will puke within the first 10 minutes, so for reduced stress levels we prefer not to.

We have been to Flamborough before in the car and I really loved it, will leave it for next time though.

Scarborough is a good idea. If DC are ok on a train, you could visit York, Filey, Brid and Hull

Breadandroses1 · 07/07/2020 22:11

@Raera totally fine on the train! DP's family live in Hull but we've actually not been to York so that's an option for a rainy day.

If you go to York on a rainy day go to the National Railway Museum. It's next to the train station, is free & will have activities on eg Thomas the Tank Engine.

TowelCurtainBob · 07/07/2020 22:19

And the Castle Museum!

Scarby9 · 07/07/2020 22:28

Scarborough is a much better choice than Brid if you are without a car. The Sealife Centre has reopened, shops etc are open if it does rain ( which it won't!). The beaches and walking are great. Might be worth trying to book a chalet for a day or the week?

Jorvik centre in York is great for kids too. We went to flamingo land theme park as well but I drove
