Suffolk: chilled holiday for couple

Hi all

DP and I need a break and I'm thinking of Suffolk. Neither of us have ever been, so I'd love some advice and views from people who know it.
It's just the two of us and we're thinking of 10 days or 2 weeks in late August/Sept, self-catering.

We'd like some beaches, perhaps a mix of town ones and quieter ones (ideally we'd stay somewhere with either sea views or a short stroll to the sea); and we'd like to do a bit of walking around the estuaries and inland nature reserves.
Not so bothered about amenities other than food shops, as a lot of things will presumably be not open, or open for takeaway only/with limits on number of people allowed in etc.

We really just want a quiet, scenic time pottering, walking, and having the odd bag of chips on the seafront. We'd like a nice comfortable house/flat, although it doesn't have to be luxurious (we don't have a luxury budget!).

We'd ideally not need to drive to get to beaches/nice walks etc (as we don't have a car and would have to hire one).

Any insights very gratefully received!

We love going to aldeburgh and Southwold. Lots of nice walks and great pubs.

bloodywhitecat · 02/07/2020 10:41

Southwold?

Aldeburgh is lovely too but the beach is more stony

IntermittentParps · 02/07/2020 10:52

Thanks! Was wondering about Walberswick too. Anyone know it there?

Yes lovely there too- a nice walk to Southwold or you could get the little boat!

bloodywhitecat · 02/07/2020 10:57

Yes, it's just across the river Blyth estuary from Southwold, we often park in Southwold where the parking is free and get the little rowboat ferry across to Walberswick (I think it's a £1 each). It's lovely but it is a village rather than a town.

MotherMorph · 02/07/2020 10:58

Walberswick and Southwold are beautiful but if you want a quiet and relaxed place I think they might be swamped during school holidays

bloodywhitecat · 02/07/2020 11:04

Orford Ness is a really fascinating place for a walk if you can get there.

Haz1516 · 02/07/2020 11:04

Walberswick is gorgeous but is small so will get very busy. Aldeburgh and Southwold are always busy in the summer. None of these places are far away from one another though, so it makes sense to maybe get somewhere in a nearby village/town and then drive to these places. Maybe Yoxford, Orford or Snape? But there are many beautiful villages scattered close to the coast line.

Not much in walberswick but you could use it as a base, Southwold is nice, Aldeburgh. I grew up in Suffolk and had a wk camping nearer st Edmunds, visited clair and around Banham it was a nice chilled wkend. Snape is a nice place to visit if your near Aldbrough,, Lots of lovely walks, coats, estuaries.

This company specialises in Suffolk holiday cottages. Their service was great and the accommodation well equipped and spotless. We stayed in Thorpeness which is less busy than Aldeburgh but within easy reach.. www.bestofsuffolk.co.uk/

Thanks everyone! TheDogsMother, that's a great site, thank you.

MotherMorph, true! We're both freelance so can go at any time, really; but we've been working hard all year and need a break sooner rather than later. Could maybe go early to mid-Sept instead, but I wouldn't want to leave it any later than that as, apart from needing a break, I'd like at least fairly decent weather.

Go to Shingle Street (look up the history) and Orford (look up the wild man of Orford). Woodbridge is nice with lots of lovely pubs and Adnams brewery.

IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 11:19

Thanks Queen. I have read a bit about Shingle Street and Orford. Strange and fascinating history.

If we stayed in Woodbridge would it be feasible to get to the coast fairly easily? We don't have a car but are fit and healthy and happy to walk a fair way (within reason!)

Thank you! It looks lovely. Understandably, it's unavailable this Sept though.
