Would you book a UK self-catering holiday for end of July?

We have annual leave booked for end of July and are wondering whether to bite the bullet and book a UK self-catering cottage. Keen to support the UK tourism industry but would be a bit disappointed if many attractions/cafes etc. still closed. Do we hang on for another announcement and risk our shortlisted cottages getting booked up or just go ahead and book. Advice/thoughts appreciated! x

We have, with the landmark trust who will give us our money back if we can’t travel. We don’t care about things being open as much as getting to a different place and doing some walks though.

daytripper28 · 16/06/2020 15:44

Ours was booked already - fingers crossed it will go ahead.

emmathedilemma · 16/06/2020 16:05

Right now i'd be happy to just get away for a change of scenery, take a supermarket shop, maybe have a couple of local takeaways and explore the great outdoors, or even chill in a garden but I guess it depends what you want out of your holiday. I'm not tied to school holidays so i'm looking to book somewhere for mid September once they all go back.

tiredanddangerous · 16/06/2020 16:29

Probably not because I’d be worried about nothing being open when I got there! I have two young dc to entertain though. I’d probably risk it if it were just dh and I.

SummerHouse · 16/06/2020 16:32

Already booked. Don't care if nothings open. The sea will be open and I literally can't wait to swim in it. Hopefully a fish and chip shop will be open. Do it.

whataboutbob · 17/06/2020 19:29

@SummerHouse me too, the sea is one thing I have missed most of all. I live in London and don’t have a car. We have one week in west wales booked for August, I so hope we get to go. Fish and chips by a harbour, never thought I’d miss it so much.

AdriannaP · 17/06/2020 19:30

We will do the same. Change of scenery is still a holiday and supermarket and take aways will be open.

ihatethecold · 17/06/2020 20:49

I am debating this right now, our family holiday was cancelled last week to Thailand in July ( I knew this would happen)
All 5 of us have annual leave booked and the dogs are still booked into the home boarders but I have no idea where to go.

we love Cornwall but i'm wary of being welcome and it may not be fair to go there if they are struggling with the infection rate.

Applejack87 · 22/06/2020 10:42

We are thinking about a week away in the UK not quite sure where but I’m sure there will be a surge for bookings soon
Is anyone worried about the hygiene in accommodation and if they’ve been deep cleaned after previous visitors ? Are you all happy to use the bedding or bring your own.i usually bring my own pillows anyway
This might sound paranoid but it’s just a thought

ineedaholidaynow · 22/06/2020 10:45

Has anyone thought what they would need to do if they have to self isolate?

UserFriendly14 · 22/06/2020 21:24

We’re still weighing up the leave it til last minute to book (in case of self isolation etc) vs everything getting booked up quickly. At the moment I’m leaning more towards booking something, so we know what we’re aiming for and hope the holiday company are understanding if we need to SI.

Jellykat · 22/06/2020 21:44

I clean a self catering holiday cottage in West Wales, we're already booked up from mid July to end of October!

I'll be cleaning in full PPE, which is going to be tough, and everything, but everything will be cleaned. We're arranging 6 hours instead of the usual 4 between guests departure and arrival, and i'll have help. Just saying any decent let will already be planning

CherryPavlova · 22/06/2020 21:47

We have a few days booked. I am intending to go.

Sweetpea84 · 23/06/2020 14:34

I’ve just booked a 10 day break end of July yesterday before the announcement got a really good deal, I was worried the prices would leap and everything would get booked. Can’t wait to just go to the beach and get out of London

Applejack87 · 23/06/2020 21:27

We’ve just booked as well tbh I’m looking forward to getting away as we’ve been isolating for three months it’s getting to everyone now . I am nervous though the accommodation we’ve booked is modern and looks clean but I will give it a blitz when we get there

LindainLockdown · 25/06/2020 18:28

Just booked the first week in August in Devon. It was the last week available for the property in July & August so I'm so glad we have something booked and to look forward to. It is a detached property with it's own private garden. I also take my own pillows on UK hols anyway but will also take lots of cleaning stuff with us, my kids are older so thankfully lots less of their stuff to get in the car these days.

pigeon999 · 25/06/2020 18:37

Already booked, going next weekend and again in August. Everything is opening, so I am not worried we will be bored. We have already booked activities with different companies, and decided where to eat etc.

We will be the first ones in the cottage, so can be quite sure it is fine as no one has been there for 4 months!

I am taking my cleaning products and will bleach everything before we unpack and we will take lots of good food and wine.

If we are ill, in the unlikely event. We will pack up and go straight home without stopping and recover there. I don't anticipate anyone being ill, as infection rate is currently at zero here.

We intend to be just as careful as we have been up to now, picnics on a different beach every day, rock pooling, sailing and relaxing is what we have planned.

I actually can not wait to go! I am so excited!

pigeon999 · 25/06/2020 18:40

The people we spoke to in Cornwall we thrilled we were coming, and are desperate for the trade, so if our phone calls are anything to go by we have been made to feel really welcome.

No1HolidayPlanner · 25/06/2020 19:28

Booked to go to Woolacoombe middle of July... can't wait 😊

Splattherat · 07/07/2020 22:44

Still sitting on the fence of whether or not to try and book something.

Oly4 · 07/07/2020 22:47

Yep have booked a week self catering and can’t wait

isthiswalter · 07/07/2020 22:57

I'm away now and most places are open (Devon)

PassingByAndThoughtIdDropIn · 07/07/2020 23:02

Just have, and I had a job finding something available tbh. I’ve checked that the major attractions near us will be at least partially open and there’s lots to travel round and see even if they don’t. I’d be a bit pissed off of all the takeaways were closed but I think that’s unlikely.

Titsywoo · 08/07/2020 15:12

I've booked a couple of nights in London for me, DH and the 2 teens. Hotels are hugely cheap. I got 3 rooms for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) at a Premier Inn Hub at Covent Garden for £342 total. I'm sure we can keep ourselves busy for 48 hours even if nothing much is open (I love London and can just walk around for hours).
