Northumberland

Can anyone recommend a nice seaside town to use as a base which is close to Hadrian's Wall and Roman 'stuff' and also a castle? By close I mean about 30 min drive. I've never been to Northumberland it looks so beautiful. Many thanks.

Bamburgh is absolutely beautiful! Lots of people stay in and like Seahouses. Warkworth also lovely though not right on the coast. Hope that helps x

Both Bamburgh and Warkworth have amazing castles. The Northumberland coast is a bit of a drive away from main sites on Hadrians Wall, though x

Bamburgh, Beadnell and Seahouses are all charming in their own ways, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castles are fabulous.

Don't think they're thirty minutes to Hadrian's Wall though (happy to be corrected). We usually stop there on way there and/or back.

Haltwhistle or Hexam are fairly central on Hadrians Wall - the scenery is spectacular and there is plenty of wall to see along with museums and attractions like Housteads.

It's definitely more than 30 mins drive from the coast to any of the main Hadrian's wall sites.

The Roman sites are fairly well inland. If you want to stay on the coast (lots of castles), you really need to be prepared to drive more like an hour to Vindolanda, Housesteads and Corbridge. Seahouses and Craster are popular.Alnwick is neither, but neither Roman or coastal. Same for Warkworth.

Half an hour's drive doesn't get you very far in Northumberland. It's very scenic though and lovely to visit. There are lots of nice villages to stay in and The Potted Lobster in Bamburgh had excellent food.

Tynemouth/Whitley Bay

Beadnell/Seahouses/Bamburgh (the three are very close together with Seahouses in the middle, which is handy as it has a co op as well as numerous other shops)

Craster

Alnmouth

There are others but the above are the nicest, in my opinion.

I live in one of the above and have a lovely life there (I've name changed to say this as I'm a paranoid bugger Grin)

Also - Hadrian's Wall is more than a thirty minute drive from all areas of the coast, I would say

floppyhats · 10/06/2020 11:53

Should also add that Tynemouth isn't actually Northumberland, but it's close.

Thank you all. That's great. Some lovely suggestions. Hadrian’s wall is a bit further than I thought / hoped. But still doable x
