Considering driving to Ireland via Holyhead in the future. Where would you suggest stopping over enroute from London? Thanks

Overnight? Or just for a short rest break? I've done it many times and don't stop off over night, just stop at services along the way when needed.
From time to time we've stayed with friends in Manchester to break the journey and that works well too. But it is possible to do it from London in one day.

We drove easily in a day. It’s only about 5 hours I think. We got an early afternoon ferry, good length of time for a break and then drove again once in Ireland.

Oh thanks. Driving with a toddler so definitely want to stop off for a decent rest or equally happy to stay over night. Not in a rush if that helps.

I stopped in Warwick. Long story but unexpectedly had time to kill between London and Holyhead and we chose it at random. We just spent a few hours mooching on a summer's evening. Very mellow.

Plenty of other places just into Wales on the A55, e.g Carnarvon. Castle, park, runaround space etc. One time we took the old A5 cross-country route through Betswy-Coed. Can't remember exactly where we stayed, except there was a waterfall (was quite near to Betswy), but it was a nice stop-over (like you, had young kids and were not in a hurry).

I can provide a bit more info if you'd like?

The Trentham Estate is right next to the M6.

I thought we weren't allowed to travel unnecessarily? (Not having a go)

Katjolo · 09/05/2020 21:08

Some good ideas. Thanks. I'll take a look.

@Ringsender2, did you stay at Swallow Falls?

Funf · 10/05/2020 06:33

If its a nice location about 1 hours from Holyhead you need I would stay on the mainland, Betws y coed is nice have a look here, Conwy falls and fairy glen

If you want even more spectacular Aber falls or Pistyll Rhaeadr. Aber has a beach nearby too. Plenty of accommodation if you fancy an overnight stop its like a holiday whilst on holiday.

@Ringsender2
I don't feel Swallow falls is as good as some of the others its just better known, lots of others nearby

Ringsender2 · 10/05/2020 12:42

@Funf you're probably right. I don't think we did a huge amount of homework, other than finding something vaguely interesting to stop off at. Your suggestions above sound really good

Funf · 10/05/2020 13:03

@Ringsender2
Thanks we feel North Wales is packed with stuff to see and do but some are hidden away and take some finding.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 11/05/2020 10:30

Stratford is a little off the motorway. It would be a good place for an overnight stay or long leisurely lunch and leg stretch.
Further up Chester is worth a visit

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 11/05/2020 10:32

(I'm also spending time planning future holidays! Not quite the same as planning when you know you are going soon but hey!)

Katjolo · 11/05/2020 19:20

Great ideas. Thabks
