If lockdown is lifted, where can we go in the UK that is like St Ives?

Been there a few times. What I like about it is the abundance of lovely restaurants and cafes and the gorgeous beaches and views. And the vibe.

I don't like the drive there though (we are in the north west), so were wondering about maybe Dorset or Devon as an alternative. We don't mind an apartment as would eat out most nights (dpeending on lockdown restrictions being lifted of course).

jAll this just might be fantasy holiday shopping as I've had a gin and feeling sad that we've cancelled our holiday to Costa Adeje. I am hoping UK holidays will be fine by the end of August so just thinking about options (if there will be any availability!)

Abersoch is a good option. I doubt you’d be possible to maintain any social distance there though.

LazyDoll · 04/05/2020 19:37

Obviously bearing in mind all the ifs, buts and maybes BUT North Devon is wonderful. Croyde area. Or Kingsbridge, South Devon. No harm in looking with a gin - enjoy looking at some of those beautiful beaches. Barricane and South Milton Sands are 2 of my favourites. Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 04/05/2020 19:40

If you're in the north west then it's a lot easier to get to north wales, esp Anglesey. It may not have exactly the same vibe as st ives but has much to commend it. Imo there's a lot more options if it's not beach weather than cornwall.

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/05/2020 19:45

The only places close to St Ives are Windermere, Bournemouth, and Brighton. But to be honest nothing really comes close to the vibe of St Ives. I have a similar issue in that I love the place but can’t justify the 6 hour drive with a baby.

ineedaholidaynow · 04/05/2020 19:48

What about flying to the Scilly Isles?

Tempnamelady · 04/05/2020 19:49

We have a caravan in Morfa Nefyn ( well it’s in storage for the foreseeable obviously ). It’s lovely there, few pubs and restaurants , lovely dog friendly beach, you can drive to Abersoch,Pwhelli and also Aberdaron. All different.

Funf · 06/05/2020 20:36

@tempnamelady
I have to agree, don't forget Criccieth and Glas Fryn goKarting.
We should keep it quite really!

maddy68 · 06/05/2020 20:37

Whitby. Lovely restaurants, walks , stuff to do

Tempnamelady · 06/05/2020 21:19

@Funf we agree it’s N Wales best kept secret. Love Criccieth too. When you turn left at Bangor and head down it’s just like an Ahhhhhhhh and relax . Where we were sited last year we could just make out Ireland in the distance. Can’t wait to go back when the time is right.

Newcornishmama · 06/05/2020 21:20

I'm from st ives.. second best would be croyde imo.

melodien · 06/05/2020 21:35

St Davids in Pembrokeshire

mnahmnah · 06/05/2020 21:38

Robin hoods bay. Staithes. Whitby.

DenimDrift · 06/05/2020 21:40

dont bother, everyone will have the same idea....everywhere will be rammed and you will be adding to the problem

some people who live and work in these areas and won't want the influx

corryj · 06/05/2020 21:41

Southwold in Suffolk is beautiful. Lovely pier, great for just wandering.

Flamingolingo · 06/05/2020 21:47

I grew up in S’nives and I don’t really think you can match it. There are other Cornish towns that are nice, but it’s quite a special place. We always go back because to get anywhere nearly as good you have to go almost as far. I don’t often stay in St Ives though, because I don’t like how busy it gets (though staying in town means you don’t have to faff with parking). I think Cornwall gets better and better the further west you go and it’s always worth it. It’s a long way from the North West but I always end up taking to northerners who have travelled many hours to get there. I hope the restaurants can hang on in this climate, the abundance of good food is one of the best things about the place

Divebar · 06/05/2020 21:49

Staithes is lovely and I’ve stayed there about 3 times but it’s not quite in the same league as St Ives ( it’s smaller, not many restaurants, less everything actually ). I like visiting in that area ( Falling Foss being a favourite destination) but it’s different to Cornwall. I have family in St Ives so we visit frequently but sadly only in school holidays and it’s so busy I actually find it unpleasant. Wales would definitely be somewhere I would be keen to explore.

musicmatterstome · 06/05/2020 21:55

Tempnamelady - I am lucky enough to live a couple of miles from Morfa Nefyn 😊 Went for a walk through the golf course to the sea just yesterday 😃

Ifeel1000yearsold · 06/05/2020 21:56

Definitely Abersoch. Same vibe.

MelonsMcGee · 06/05/2020 22:12

Lyme Regis?

Tempnamelady · 06/05/2020 22:41

@musicmatterstome that’s a lovely walk. We once walked the coastal path from Tudweiliog , my goodness it was much longer than we though.

clary · 06/05/2020 22:52

I don't know St Ives as such, but have been to Cornwall and we always say Pembrokeshire so like Cornwall without the crowds.

We used to stay in Tenby and it is really special.

Staithes is a nice fishing village but it's cold up there, I used to live in Whitby and it was never warm and the sea is Freezing.

ANoiseAnnoys · 06/05/2020 23:05

I believe Croyde is lovely OP. I’ve been to the Weymouth and Torquay areas which I seem to remember were nice but st ives is very unique imo - we go every year and I’m going to miss it too if we can’t go (seems unlikely we will be going!)

Abersoch/north wales is your best bet if you don’t want to travel far but it’s no comparison for Cornwall imo. Abersoch has a very small selection of cafes/restaurants which are nigh on impossible to get a table in in the summer. You can usually get in Manana, a Mexican restaurant there but you have to queue to get a table. The shops are fat face, white stuff, jack wills and 2 or 3 boutiques. That and newsagents etc. and a few pubs. I do love abersoch but it’s no St. Ives! Also very little to do around there bar visiting various beaches. The nearest town, Pwllheli is ok for a visit to costa coffee and the small funfair and that’s about it.

Daffodil101 · 10/05/2020 01:13

Salcombe is nice. It’s about 7/10 compared to St Ives.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/05/2020 14:08

Just coming back to this thread, thanks for all the suggestions. For those mentioning Absersoch, Criccieth, I've never been but do know someone who has a holiday home in Abersoch (I know, I know), so I get to hear about things like not beinb able to get in restaurants etc. Not for me, thanks. What I love about St Ives is that there are so many different absolutely lovely restaurants that If you're there for a week it's hard to choose which ones to leave out! Lots of lovely memories of things like running out of the Lifeboat Inn to see the seal that was drawing the crowds just across the path at high tide when the sea was right up against the harbour wall....Ah, I love it so much.....lucky people who live there.....Envy

I'm not a huge fan of N Wales to be honest. Places like Pwheli etc aren't really for me. Not really a fan of things like chain coffee shops, I prefer independents in seaside town. ANd not bothered about smallish funfairs with kids mid-late teens. Anglesey is ok. Haven't been for years since I was little myself. Scenery not quite as spectacular as Cornwall or Devon, I don't think?

Now Tenby is a thought, and Pembrokeshire generally. We used to go there mid-teens and enjoyed the walks. Does it have as many nice eating places as St Ives though? It also a bit of a bugger to get to actually from Liverpool where I am. Guess that's why we've always considered if we have to drive nearly 5 hours to get to it we may as well go to Devon or somewhere instead.

I love South Devon, @LazyDoll. South Hams are bloody gorgeous. NOt been for a number of years so that's a good call actually. I looked at Salcombe holiday homes a year or two back and they were really expensive at the time, I was a bit shocked! I thought they'd be cheaper than St Ives, but wasn't the case at all. Was thiking possibly Darthmouth too. Been on a couple of day trips there while on holiday in S Devon.

Staithes, Whitby, both places I would like to visit but yes, not sure about the location in the north, and temperatures, and the smaller choice of places to eat......I will consider them, though, thanks.

@Flamingolingo, I agree with everything you say. I am comparing every other place to St Ives and I need to stop as i'm not sure there IS anywhere else like it. Re: eating out, I am not a huge foodie - we hardly ever go out at home cos of the cost, but Liverpool has some lovely places to eat so I would want more than pub grub. The best part of being on holiday is justifying going out to eat more, and daily ice creams of course! So yes, nice restaurants and a good choice of them is definitely a priority for us all. And St Ives definitely has that.

@DenimDrift: er, thanks for the input! Grin I did actually refer to it as fantasy holiday shopping. I have no desire to rush off anywhere until everywhere is totally back to normal, and to contribute to the local tourist economy without the threat of spreading the virus or putting a strain on the local health resources. I'm sure tourist towns might be happy for tourists to come back eventually when it's safe to do so and spend their money there.

I don't know much at all about Southwold so will have a good google. Thanks for that suggestion.

Ah, Lyme Regis, I was wondering about that! Never been to that area, I think my sons may like the Jurassic Coast. Will google more, thanks.

I wonder if holidays in Britain will become more popular again? Don't think the aviation industry will be back to normal any time soon and I reckon holidays abroad are going to become very expensive again.

I would go on hol here every year if I could guarantee the weather. We have spent a lot of money on nice holiday accommodation in Devon & Cornwall before in expensive places like St Ives and then it's rained most of the week and we've felt we haven't been able to enjoy things like beach bars etc. And everything looks a bit rubbish in the rain, doesn't it?

We went to Tenby a few years back and it is really lovely, lots of eateries and the beach is lovely.
