Probiotics in newborns

Hi,

My baby boy is now 5 weeks old and has been suffering with oral thrush for the past 3 weeks. He has had 2 courses of nyastatin and still has patches of thrush in his mouth. After reaching out on here this morning, I was advised to ask for miconazole and the GP prescribed it this morning.

I've been wracking my brain as to why he cannot get rid of this thrush and what has caused it. I only breastfed for 7 days and did not suffer with thrush on my nipples. He is formula fed now and drinks 4-6oz every 2-4hrs. My baby is really struggling with his stomach, he has what we believe is colic. We have put him on Cow and Gate comfort, no improvement, colief drops, no improvement, gripe water, a little improvement. During and after feeds, he arches his spine and screams out in pain, he pulls his knees up and is quite visibly in pain.

He is thriving and gaining weight (was 8lb11oz born and now 12lb). Poo's twice a day and plenty of wees. Tonight (about an hour ago) he pooed, and it was the normal formula fed dark yellow colour (a bit like chicken korma) but for the first time, it had a few strings of black/dark green very small stringy mucous.

I should add that I'm a nurse and he is not clinically unwell, his capillary refill is less than 1 sec, his resp rate is normal, no bloating of his abdomen, normal breathing pattern and no temperature.

After researching the flecks black/green string, it suggests (along with his other symptoms) that this could either be a milk allergy, or his body struggling with his ongoing thrush.

As a result of Covid-19, and the fact he is clinically stable, I am reluctant to present for medical assistance (obviously I will if his condition changes) but I've read that introducing probiotic supplements to his milk once a day will combat his thrush and in turn, should help his stomach pains.

A very long winded way of asking, but which probiotic would you recommend?

Thanks in advance

Laura x

We were recommended these by the paediatrician when our newborn was constantly writhing and grunting at night:

www.amazon.co.uk/BioGaia-Lactobacillus-Reuteri-ProTectis-Drops/dp/B00LEYBM8K?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I couldn't say if they worked or not but we figured that anything was worth a try!

Thank you. I was looking at these earlier on.

Is it just once a day or with every feed?

Anything is worth a try. He is so unhappy and need to improve things for him.

I used biogaia for my firstborn who had awful cmpa and they really helped, I recommend them to everyone! It's a dose of 7 or 8 drops once a day I think- just follow the instructions in the packaging.

That's fantastic. Thank you both. I will order now and fingers crossed it helps him x
