Hey,
Just wondered if anyone had done the NC500 and if you had any tips? Will be going with our two DDs in the summer. Thanks!

I cycled it last year. It was fab!

FunnyInjury · 10/03/2020 07:15

It's on my list Smile Theres a Facebook group with lots of good advice, think it's just called NC500.

fluffynotebook · 10/03/2020 07:28

Cycling sounds amazing!
Thank you, I'll check out the FB page.

You'll have an amazing time. We spent 2 weeks doing it in a motor home with 2 DCs a couple of years ago. All have great memories.

Make sure you include a couple of days on the Isle of Harris and Lewis if you get time. Beaches rival any other I've seen around the world, especially Luskentyre beach in the south.

There are too many amazing beaches to mention all on the west/north west coasts, but Achmelvich beach really is like nothing else you'll see in the UK. There's a lovely campsite right by the beach and fellow campers are probably the only other people you'll get on this beach.

Sango sands at Durness is a must. Gorgeous views over another great beach.

If you can also fit in a ferry to Orkney for a night or two, the kids were in awe of Skara Brae, Maeshowe and the standing stones (although we are history geeks Grin)

Dunrobin Castle on the east coast a good one of the many castles in Scotland.

Loads of adventure sports to do at Rothiemurchus, near Aviemore, if you go that far south. We ended the holiday white water river tubing and stand up paddle boarding.

We were in a 6 berth motor home so didn't venture along the Bealach na Ba road, but that looks amazing if you're going to be in a car.

My husband and I have travelled far and wide around the world but I can honestly say the NC500 was one of our favourite holidays.

Have a great time Grin

By the way, we were there in early June before the Scottish schools break up. There was no need to pre book any campsites and the roads were pretty good at that time.

I think it gets pretty busy the later into summer you get.

emmathedilemma · 10/03/2020 13:16

I'm quite anti the NC500, it's turning a remote and beautiful part of the country into a procession of tourists, most of whom have no idea how to drive on single track roads.
But if you're going then don't miss the chocolate factory at Balnakiel craft village and the kids might like Smoo Cave. The pie shop in Lochinvar is worth a trip (unless you hate pie!). If the kids are ever remotely travel sick then take a large supply of travel pills!

If you're going during school holidays, it would be wise to pre-book accommodation as it does get incredibly busy. Make sure you get off the main route sometimes - you don't have to go far to have whole beaches to yourself, even in busy periods (some people seem to take pride in doing the route in 2 days, have no idea why and they miss so much).

The Black Isle and Nigg Ferry, Dornoch (there are seals along the coast here), the glens to the west of Brora and Helmsdale 9excellent fish and chips in Helmsdale) which are usually incredibly quiet and very lovely.

You could visit Croick Church and see the messages scratched in the windows by the families moved from their homes during the clearances - very atmospheric.

Best thing about John O' Groats (apart from the road out!) is the signpost and the foot ferry to Orkney - as said above, if you can get to Orkney it is worth the trip (if the weather is fine). St Magnus' Cathedral at Kirkwall is amazing, Skara Brae and Ring of Brodgar well worth a visit and we really like Stromness.

All of the west coast is beautiful, the Bealach na Ba is a wonderful drive but you need to be aware that some visitors drive it when they probably shouldn't and it makes for quite a bit of reversing and pulling over.

Skye - make sure you've got your accommodation booked before you go and visit the Oyster Shed at Carbost if you like seafood - far less pretentious and for less expensive than a lot of seafood spots on the west coast.

Inverewe Garden is beautiful.

There are so many fantastic beaches on the West Coast - all you need is the weather!

Sounds wonderful.

We went to Achmelvich last year. Didn't love at all - Harris is by far better. I found the 500 touristy and overrun by Scottish standards. We go each May half term.

Letsnotargue · 10/03/2020 22:40

We did it 4 years ago in a small camper and loved it. Lots of little stops if you fancy it, stunning scenery whatever the weather (and despite it being July/August we had it all). Stunning beaches all to ourselves, lochs, castles, cliffs.

We didn’t prebook anywhere, but spent quite a few nights parked up out of the way rather than in a campsite. Some of it is very rural so make sure you get fuel when you have the chance.

WindowGazer2 · 10/03/2020 22:45

Book ahead. We did it with our two DC last year. There are not many places to pull in overnight. Clachtoll campsite is busy but good for amenities and another cracking beach. Lochinver pie shop is great. Sango Sands also fab. We cut down and missed the NE corner because it is apparently the less inspiring bit, but friends did a day trip to Orkney and loved that. Mellon Udrigle is stunning and great if you're in a campervan but keep it quiet.
